It appears the answer is debatable.  Some believe that the lack of the "x" between the 2 and the (1+2) implies that you must multiply them together before doing anything else.  Others believe that the "x" is implied when left out.  I'd be interested to see a reputable source on the right way to do it, all I could find was different people's answers on other forums.  And this:

Step 1: (1+2) = 3 (Do it first because it's a parenthetical)
Step 2: 6÷2 = 3 (Always go from left to right)
Step 3: 3*3 = 9 (Putting a parenthetical section directly adjacent to another section means multiplication; and we are again going left to right)

The answer is 9. Trust me, I won a State Math Championship in my younger years. Remember, it's not Multiplication THEN Division, it's Multiplication AND Division.

Hm, then it would appear that what I learned in school was wrong. Because if you had, say, 6 / 2x, you would always multiply 2 by the value of x first. My tests were always marked correctly when I did it that way.

I will say that the last time wasn't really her fault, that was just bad luck to happen on her shift. It is correct to do it that way IF the question is posed as a fraction with 6 as the numerator and 2x as the denominator because you solve the top separately from the bottom and then divide but in the form that the original question is posted, you don't look at it as the part left of the division symbol as the numerator and the part right of the division symbol as the denominator

From the confusion over this question, it seems clear that the mathematical phrasing is ambiguous.  Some see it one way, some see it the other.

The decent solution would be to phrase the equation in a less ambiguous manner with the use of additional parentheses.

They're multiplying the 2 with the parenthesis number first, and then dividing 6 by 6.
