Hey all,

I'm just starting oral HRT, but I've been seriously considering doing the implanted pellet method.  Since I'm in Southern California, I was considering going to John O'Dea. http://www.odeamedical.com/  I hear good things about the results (fast, low side effects) and it seems like it would be safer and healthier than taking orals.  It sounds so good but it does seem to be the road less traveled, as most girls go for orals and then shots.   Does anyone have any experience with this method?  What costs can I expect?  I'm not hurting for money, but at the same time it doesn't grow in trees either :D  Thanks!

-------------------------------------------
EDIT- 4 Months In

Dosage: 8 Estrogen Pellets every 3 months (I've only taken 2 trips).  Also progesterone injections every month and a half.

In my first meeting with Dr. O'Dea he told me 'It'll get to a point where u have to change your name because you won't be able to get by under your old one."  Turns out he wasn't kidding around O.o

I thought I'd update this as I realized it's been 4 months since I started this method with Dr. O'Dea! :X  Yes, it's very expensive but it has worked like crazy O_o  I'll just go through the categories.

Height:  In 4 months I've lost almost a full inch of height.  People say this doesn't / can't happen but I know why it does... my legs have angled out more, and my spine is getting more S curved.

Weight / Body : My body is definitely feminizing, muscle is going away and my frame is much more scrawny boney. It always kind of was, but a lot more so now.  I'm eating like a pig and losing weight because muscle is being replaced by fat XD My 'guy' clothes won't fit me anymore the same way... i.e. the shirts are very loose and baggy and the sleeves hang down over my hands, and the pants well- it's hard getting hips into them.

Shoe Size: Not much change, went down a 1/2 size.

Hair: Has thickened a LOT.  Gotten a lot more light and fluffy too.  The defined M shape in my hairline is going away as lots of little strands are now poking up at the corners.  It's also nice that my scalp sweats less.  I can do 4 days w/o washing it and it's still nice.  I should mention it was long (past shoulders) before HRT and I had no signs of thinning.

Body Hair: This is the craziest.  I was never too hairy, but I'd naturally grow some on my lower stomach, and a tiny patch at top of chest.  That's all turned white now, and slowly softening into that 'baby fuss'.   All of the hair on my forearms has done the same.  I used to shave chest & lower stomach, now just legs (and even then, it's much less frequent).  Haven't done facial electro yet, but my facial hair has lightened and I would have to go 3 days w/o shaving or using crams or something for it to be noticeable by touch, 4-5 by sight. Facial hair is much, much more sparse too (it was sparse before, never could grow beard, goatee, moustache, anything). I figure this is where I'm saving the most money using this method, I hear of people spending thousands and thousands for electro :X So even tho it's expensive, I'm making up for it.  Luckily, my hair color is naturally so light & facial hair so sparse I don't get a 'shadow' at all... just random pokies if I don't touch it.

Breast: Comfortably fill out a 34 A cup.  I hit the biggest growth at month 3.

Facial: Okay, so a lot of ppl told me HRT wouldn't change much in the face and I freaked out about doing FFS... well, that hasn't held true for me.  Yes, I still have the same bone shapes, which could be better, but fat & muscle has re-arranged on my face a lot so that I look very different.... to the point where family members haven't recognized me.  Also helps that lashes have thickened and gotten longer.  My nose has literally changed its shape (but only in the cartiledge).  It's very pointy and narrow now at the end.

Smell: Much lighter & sweeter, I don't really have much a body odor anymore.

Voice: I've heard everyone voice doesn't change. Mine did.  It's VERY uncomfortable for me to go lower now, even when trying to say, mimick a guy's voice or something as a joke.  Maybe part of that is being gendered female by others I've started to raise it up, but I kind of forgot what my old voice sounded like :x  Idk I haven't really done formal voice training, I just naturally started talking higher / into female range. Best I can do when trying to pass off as a guy when legality requires it is to add sum rasp to my voice.

Overall Physical:  I already looked sorta femme before (was gendered as female while wearing male clothes about once a month), but even when trying to go 'guy mode' in guy clothes and my hair pulled back, etc... I'm still addressed as female almost always (or just gender neutral).  It's taken a little bit adjusting to such sudden change, especially the different way guys treat me O_o (I'm a lesbian in a relationship with a woman, so the attention makes me feel uncomfortable most the time).

Moods / Personality: The best part.  The only negatives is that I can't drink caffeine and I get VERY cranky if I don't get 8 hours of sleep a night and 3 meals a day.  Other than that though, much more easier to understand others & empathize with them, especially other women.  Another thing- I was led to believe by some my sexuality would change and I'd go straight, start finding guys attractive... this has not happened at all.  In fact, the reverse has happened XD I'm much more  uncomfortable around men (kind of scared of them just a bit). Get scared more easily especially at night... and yes, it is true it is much, much, much easier to cry (but then again it's easier to be happy too!)

TL;DR This stuff has hit me like crazy fast! O.o not everyone will get same results i dun know how much is genetic, psychological w/e, but I do know that I'm gendered as female (or neutral) 99% of the time now and a great portion of that when I'm trying my damndest to still come across as a guy for legal reasons cuz I haven't had the name change go thru yet.  Should also mention I'm at the tail end of my 20's, so youngish still but definately not a teenager or anything.

You might PM Jennygirl - I believe she's said that she uses that doctor and also uses the pellet system. Or maybe do a search.

I just recently started the pellet method last month and I quite prefer it over oral. The main draw for me is aside from the stable flow of estrogen and lack of side effects is that I don't have to remember to take my pill 3 times a day. Granted it's pretty expensive but I believe overall it's a much more efficient method of estrogen deliverance.  :)

Thanks Paige. My endo has had me on orals for the first four and a bit months but will be switching me over to pellet with the next visit. I guess he wanted to see how I'd respond to the E before sticking it under my skin. I'm seeing him again in a week and a half so will be able to judge from that point onwards. Like to hear from others too!

Thanks everyone <3

I think I am going to go with the pellets after all.  It sounds like it'll give better results, but above all be safer!  Thanks for your input :D I looked over the pages and looked at JennyGirl's experiences, it seems like the way to go!  I think for me since I'm really lighter (my body hair is already blonde), I'd rather put the money into hormones than spend a ton into electroysis, so I'm pretty sure I can afford this method.  It seems like after the initial feminization is done (~2-3 years) that the dosages can be lowered and the costs will go down significantly.

My endo talked with me about pellets - he is pretty keen on them.  The only downside is that the dosage can't be easily altered vs oral/patches etc.  if a steady dose is established, then most certainly they at a great way to go.

The reasons I haven't gone the pellet rout is twofold - I scar ridiculously easily and I want the ability to fiddle with dosages.

I have been on the pellets for 2 years now.  It gives me a constant flow of HRT without the side effects, much easier on my body.
I have been on estrogen and progesterone  for 24 years and sprio off and on but not for about 8 years. I have not totally transitioned yet but since  my breasts are very noticeable  36 I it is pretty much impossible not be seen as female. Just went full time. :) Yes I still do yard work!

Thanks for this discussion.

I'm older & maybe I should switch to patches or pellets? I've just been on oral, AM & PM dosage as directed.

I know on advise. I'm in good shape & doc said oral was OK however it sure seems patches are safer & alow more estrogen into the body. I'll ask on next appt.

Thanks for discussion. I had not even thought about it for quite a while, just taking my pills morning & evening.

I'm going to patches & take a higher level I hope, my blood tests are OK. My doc starting me slow. I need to move forward faster & safer I hope.

Thanks again,

Francis

Thanks again, my doc kinda slow, just suggested less expensive pills since I seemed in good shape.  However I want to step it way up maybe since patches are much safer.

Good luck your way & I'll find out soon.

I will add my voice as a STRONG recommendation for Vivelle Dot for anyone who tries patches (I was on the generics for a year or so and they were terrible). My endo actually said she suggests patches for anyone over 40, based on the fact that hormonal birth control is even considered riskier for cis women at that age and the estrogen in *that* is minute compared to our doses. I would assume pellets would also be safer for anyone of that age or with liver concerns.

I'd be tempted by the pellet thing if I weren't so scared of needles and surgery. Ironic, yes, I know. :)

(Joules : Women on a hysterectomy board that I frequent say you *can* cut some kinds of patches. Personally, though, I wouldn't risk it, and I'm not suggesting it.)

I've been on implants for well over a year, I love them!

I was intolerant of E pills and I had life threatening reaction to them.

Also you don't have to come off pellets for surgery. They are a bit more expensive but the convenience is massive. I have an implant every 6 months and that is it.

Thanks for discussion board. I'm going to switch off pills & go to patches asap & give them a try for now however these implants seem easier & smarter. I'll try & find out.

Thanks again for discussion board girl friends

Didn't think this thing was still going so much :)

I have an appt. soon to start on the pellets, I'll let everyone know how it goes.  At only a week into the orals I've already gotten results beyond the emotional / mental (fat changes in the face, softer/dryer skin, and the pain in my breast area was too much to be placebo effect).  For ref. I'm very healthy and 29, so the safety of orals isn't that big a concern for me, I just was considering it due to faster / more effective results.

I decided to go with the implant method because yes, it is kind of high cost $500-$1,000 for a visit, but that usually will keep you set for 6 months.  Here in the US w/o insurance, my oral hormones are running me almost $100 a month... so it's pretty much the same price for something that's a ton safer and more effective.  Again, I'll share my results as the weeks go on :)

Heck yes! Always happy to see others starting pellets. I am a huge fan of them. And Dr O'Dea is a wonderful endo who knows how to prescribe them incredibly effectively.

Keep an open mind with him- he's a bit of a maverick! The greatest part is that he is not afraid to feminize you quickly if that is what you desire and can afford. Sometimes his verbiage is strong winded as he can be very blunt, but he's great at what he does and I think knowing that going in you'll be just fine. You'll see what I mean ;)

Definitely let us know how it goes! And congrats!

Kristina77

Thanks JennyGirl :D

And yep, quickly is essentially what I'm going for.  My particular plan in life is going to call for a relocation anyways in about 5 months time, so I'd like to begin presenting female full-time then, and if that can be made easier than that's wonderful.

Plus after being on orals for a bit now I'm really starting to dislike how dehydrated spiro makes me.  The E is doing wonders to my facial structure already, but the dehydration from the spiro has given me a ton of more flakey, dry, itchy and sometimes red skin :/

I do hear that he can be a bit forward and strong, and my email communication so far has born that out.  I'm cool with that though, as you said shouldn't be a problem if I know what I'm doing going into it.  I'll post up my results after I go in case anyone else wants reference :D

Saw my endo today, now have a pellet implanted... was a quick and easy procedure. Now to wait and see what the effects are...! Gotta say I feel a bit weird this afternoon, but hard to know if that's from the local anaesthetic or the pellet or if it's all in my brain!

Maybe it is a bit of all three. Out of curiosity, what part of the world are you from?
  •

Jennygirl

Congrats Grace :D

May I ask how many pellet doses in total you got? I only ask because a single might be not enough to feminize, it's intended use is to keep genetic females at a steady level with one. After you are feminized and have gone through SRS/orchi one will be enough, but until then or if that isn't in the cards you would probably want at least 2 or 3 at the very minimum. It is my understanding that a lot of endo's are afraid to prescribe more than 3, but I don't know that for sure- that is just what O'Dea has told me when talking about other endo's in the area. Right now I am on a course of 12 e pellets and 1 progestin pellet.

Either way even if you just got a single I have a feeling you will notice a difference. The steadiness of the release is what it's all about :D

And I'm sorry for talking about pellet dosages, but I figure it's okay in this case because only an endo can perform pellet implantation? Correct me if I'm wrong and I'll stop mentioning it!
  •

Cindy

Well I think it is OK as long as dosage isn't mentioned. Pellets do come in different dosages so I am told.

I get one pellet every 4-6 months, yet a friend get 4-6 pellets at a time during the same time span. Obviously our level of E and the extent of feminisation etc is the key, that's why the good endo is so important. We go to the same endo BTW.

My response has been extremely satisfactory!

I had massive reactions to oral medication that (unknown to me at the time of course) were potentially life threatening. Which is one reason that I do caution people to get under professional care.

Having a stroke would definitely not have been good for my transition!
