I'm pretty sure you have to use the in-game friends list to battle others o.o I haven't found any other way.

EDIT: found it, you have to hit the connect to internet button, the blue one with the wifi kind of symbol.

I'm so, so close from getting Yvetal. But my DS started telling me LOW BATTERY!!!!! so I had to charge.

I've never really played competitive pokemon, but I'm hoping to take it up with this generation (that is, granted I don't keep restarting to attempt Nuzlockes).
