Y'know Grace, it's amazing that in such a short time on my own I've matured  and  gained so much that I'm really so grateful for this opportunity this time.  I've really noticed a big difference in myself from before when I was a member of this group and that's one thing I'm gonna stress on when I see my new psychiatrist on Monday. I saw my new psychiatrist yesterday, and my mom was with me. He asked a lot of questions, and it was funny because he was over talking my mom a lot. He had absolutely no interest at times with what she was saying, which made me feel really good. 

Then today I saw my new therapist, and we talked about a lot things and he's gonna be helping me in a very positive way. At the end of the session, he asked what name I'd like to go by and I asked if he would mind if I came dressed as a woman, and he told me that it's my sessions, not his.

You're absolutely right Jerri. I have learned so much from this site and have received so much support that I cannot begin to count how much I have. That was one thing I brought up to my therapist, and he agreed with me and he told me that because my family is so much against me transitioning that they will never see the validity of this support group.

Thanks Big Kim. Things are going exceptionally well. However I saw a psychiatrist last week, and for some reason he feels that I'm bipolar and schizophrenic and he's put me on medicine. Not sure what the medicine will do, but I know that it won't change who and what I am.

That's a fairly major diagnosis (seemingly out of he blue?) and those medicines can have quite an impact on the body...maybe get a second opinion from another psych too? How have you been reacting to the medication?

Gina, Do some research on those diagnoses.  I would definitely concur with Ms Grace's suggestion to get a second opinion.

The meds will change your observable personality.  Hopefully for the better, but only if the diagnoses are accurate.

I did have a psych try to tell me that I needed some meds for "multiple personality disorder".  Since I don't seem to have the listed symptoms, I suspect he was referring to me being trans.  He also prescribed an anti-depressant that gave me a bad case of serotonin syndrome.  I didn't go back to him - mostly because he had started writing the prescription before I had given him my list of current medication.

Psych meds are very powerful.

You have a right to know what this diagnosis is based on. You also have a right to know how you he thinks this medicine will help you. He's your psychiatrist, not God. He doesn't command you.

I've just read this. No way, go to another psychiatrist. How many visits have you had, have you had psychotherapy? Prescribing drugs at a one off consult is bordering on malpractice unless you are obviously psychotic and suffering acute symptoms.

Does this person know anything about gender disorders?

When I saw my therapist last time, my mom had brought it up, so it gave me a little time to do some research and when I saw my therapist gain, we discussed it and he told me that in the ten months that he's seen me, he's always seen my mood very level. So  I'm not sure where this psychiatrist gets his idea that I'm bipolar or schizophrenic? I'll check out the website. THX.

How many consults did you have? Did you present in a nonfunctional state? Are you suffering delusional anxiety?

I was talking with my mom yesterday and it upset her when I flat out told her that I'm a woman. She told me today that she doesn't understand how I can make such a statement when she sees me as a 'man.' Unfortunately she doesn't understand the way that I feel. But she tells me that hopefully the medication should clear p the confusion in my head. If that's the case, then I'm not gonna be taking it.
