OMG my monitor burned out on my computer. What horrible timing given that I can't afford to replce it. It was kind of a crappy monitor anyway, but I'm still disappointed. I scavenged through the garage...my parents could actually be on a show of Hoarders. I found a lot of broken computer monitors. But they had no power cord or connecting cord - so I had to find a connecting cord (easy since they all generally look the same). Power cord, whole other story. It took a lot of tries to find one that fit. This one isn't very nice but at least I can use my computer.
I hope my dad doesn't come in and want the monitor. It belonged to my brother's old computer and he doesn't care about it. If dad wanted the monitor it would be "just in case" but he'd never use it. When his stuff breaks, he needs the newest laptop or tablet, whatever the hot toy is atm. This was literally covered in dust and surrounded by rusty computer parts in the garage. Last time I built my own laptop (with ALL my own supplies) he took it and sold it to a friend for $75 and kept the cash. He claimed it was built from his parts, but it definitely wasn't.
If he ever got the idea to sell my PC, I'd destroy something very precious to him. This cost me a lot of coin to build...a whole month's paycheck! Back when I had lots of money. *sigh* I miss it.
Ugh I hate it when parents do that. Take your stuff without cause or reason (i.e. not as a punishment) and then sell it. Without your permission.
I got lucky with my parents. Happened once as a punishment, but even then wasn't selling it. Was back in '97 when N64 was coming out, and of course the school releases report cards right before Christmas. Despite the fact my grandma had pre-ordered it and could get a refund, I was stripped of it before it had arrived, and it became the communal system at her house from then on. Cousin asked if he could have it when we had to move her into assisted living, I let him.
Not at all the same, and mine was fairly justified, but I realized waaay after the fact how much it effected me. I bought ps1 the next year after saving up allowances and birthday money. Ps2 as well. Wasn't something I consciously realized, but even considering asking for a console as a gift never crossed my mind, it had to be something I saved up for and bought myself. I guess some part of me figured that since it was my money, and my saving up for it, the most they would do is ground me from it. Which is what happened. The idea that there are parents that don't even care about that, kinda hits home when I consider that even when I earned the money through my first summer job and jobs after, there are parents out there that'll still take it and sell it without a second thought, just imagining that has always bugged me. I got lucky, but fully sympathize with you on the laptop and the threat of the computer.
