I thought I was being rebellious. Looking back, it just seems immature.
As a teenager, I was rabidly skeptical about literary criticism. I felt that it was my moral imperative to battle standard interpretations of classic texts by offering valid
esque, yet completely absurd arguments.
So, I argued that Gatsby had an Oedipus Complex. And that Ophelia was actually Hamlet's second personality--that she represents the isolation, rejection, and subsequent death of Hamlet's compassion and humanity in favour of vengeance.
A crappy argument, but fun at the time.
