At one point or another, I'm sure every one of us has had to hide who we are--whether we were unsure or too afraid to "come out" about it.

I have always know that I didn't fit in neatly with the girls (and I never will), but it wasn't until recently that I seriously considered transitioning as an option. In fact, I've decided that is what I want to do. Since then, I've gotten very excited about my journey and have been takin baby steps to my end goal (passing). A few hours ago, I was in the car with my mother and I was hinting at the short hair cut I want to get (I didn't actually say boy-style), and I could tell she hated the idea though she said it was my choice.

However, she brought up the valid point of work. I work at a public library. Now I'm completely nervous about how everyone, especially my employers will take this slow transition.

I guess what I'm trying to ask is; how did you guys "come out" to your employers? Did you? How did they take it?

I'm hoping you'll want to hear from girls as well.  :)

I first spoke to my union rep (I'm a teacher), which didn't go well. He was really no help. So I went to the equity officer for our school system. I told her I was transgender and that I would be transitioning at the start of this school year. There are very strong anti-discrimination laws in my county, and she knew not to put up a fuss. She arranged a meeting with the administrators at my school. If it's helpful, details of that meeting are available here: https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,131762.msg1160088.html#msg1160088, but suffice it to say, it went very smoothly.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

My coming out at work is sort of atypical and incomplete, so bear with my story.  As of now I'm not working, but I worked twice as a temp during my transition.  They are likely going to be my future employer again in a month or so, but that's a whole other topic.  Before I started working there, one of my best friends used to be an employee for this medical practice.  He;s a very quirky metrosexual sort of guy, so it was obvious that all the girls there are okay with alternative "males".  My friend got me hired as a temp and informed his boss about my transition.  Apparently she was the only person that knew, but his mom also worked there and people talk.  When I started working there, it sort of became obvious to most people that I was "different"  Along with my quirkiness and the potential that people likely talked was ongoing changes to my appearance.  I did come out to one other employee and they were nothing but supportive.  I also spoke with my boss and she was okay with me transitioning and working for the practice.   Her words were "that will never be an issue for me". All the other employees seemed very supportive and okay with me.  Only problem was a hiring freeze blocked me and I'm waiting for an appeal to finally finish so I can work there again (probably in June or shortly after).

My story is very atypical, but you never know.  People out there are more accepting than I thought they would be and the world isn't always as dark of a place that I envision.  That's a good thing, lol.  While I can't say how your work place will react, I truly hope everything goes well.

Thank you ladies for shaking your stories with me. :) I feel 95% better already.

Suzie, I will definitely take a look at that case (probably to further ease my own nerves) :p Thank you for sending it to me. I really appreciate it!

Learning, thank you for your story as well. I hope my story is as "atypical" as yours in that I can only wish for such accepting employers and friends. Thank you for the good wishes. XD

Crossed fingers, everyone!

My employer has a policy about discrimination and it includes race and gender.

I came out at work as trans* (limited) in this order:
Operations manager
HR senior partner
Benefits
Professional Coach
Senior Vice President
HR senior partner
co-worker
Professional Coach's Partner
Diversity Chair person
Trans* work program head

It is a lot easier now than it was with the 1st person and each additional person gets easier. In a week it will be 1 year since  I came out to my boss and 3 weeks for my 1 year anniversary on HRT. Funny thing is my boss has on several occasions complemented me on the change in me, the calm and confidence. I wish he would say I am getting cuter ;)
