I suppose that most of you have gotten phone calls from people soliciting for non profit organizations. I want to warn you to be careful if you get one that starts "This is Courtesy Call for....".  "Courtesy Call" is a PROFESSIONAL FUNDRAISING COMPANY. And they chose their callers carefully to "fit" each of their clients. If for a Police/Firefighters "charity", they use a man with a gruff, clipped voice. For a breast cancer "charity", a soft voiced woman. What these "charities" have in common is that if you look them up on various sites that evaluate these, you find that less than TEN PERCENT of what they collect goes for "program expenses", ie. their ostensible purpose. The rest goes for "fundraising and administration". A legalized racket, in other words. One is called "The Breast Cancer Research and Support Fund", supposedly to raise money for research and provide support for cancer victims. Only SIX PERCENT  goes to this purpose, the rest to "fundraising and administration". The name is probably deliberately similar to the" Breast Cancer Research Foundation', a LEGITIMATE organization that gives over NINETY PERCENT of what it receives to research. So BE CAREFUL and don't waste your money on frauds.

I love "courtesy calls" that I get during dinner.

Sometimes I'll ask the caller for their home phone # and the approximate time they're eating dinner so I can call them back.  Never had a taker.

Sometimes I'll sarcastically say I gave at the office.

Sometimes we really do give at the office, but those charites are vetted.

They never get past "hello, I'm from so and so..." with me. I just say "not interested thanks" and hang up.

Someday I'm going to try to have phone sex with the unwanted caller.

Oh that's so funny..  :D

But I never get those courtesy calls since our land line was turned off and we use only cell phones now..

I imagine being one of the people who have to call all day must be a depressing job..

I have a tactic that works quite well. In fact last week I had a call from a Solar company  based in Texas trying to sell me Solar Panels. I let them do their spiel then started to get really into the Heavy sell and then I ask them if I can ask them a question. At this point they normally take a breath and then I ask is there any extra cost for installing in Wagga Wagga. That when you hear the gasp and they ask for the place to be spelt and I spell it out  and they ask where in Texas is that and I say no its in Australia... there is normally hushed tones ,... and then the ...I thought you were in Texas... and I say no you have been switched thru at your costs on an International call for the last 20 minutes. That's where I am normally left hung up! with a dialing tone in the background. I never then get any more Texas Solar Panel calls again. If its a local Australian call, I tell them I am from Padstow in England etc Works every time.

I have autism. When I get a courtsey call or telemarketing call, I will use my disability as an excuse. I just simply tell them that I am not authorized to take the call. Can they call back when my guardian or parent is here? They usuall accept that and if by some chance they don't, then I just hang up.

Yes, we got a "courtesy call" this morning at 7:45 AM.   Tech support from AT&T reminding us that we have a scheduled visit from 12-4 today.

1) No sh*t. I was on the line for 2 hours yesterday trying to get our internet service fixed.  I knew this already.
2) I told them that I didn't want to be bothered before noon.  They tried to schedule 8-12.  Yeah, not with 2 ladies in the house... Thanks so much for the wakeup call.
3) When they got my angry wife on the phone they asked "Who am I talking to." My wife lost it.  "You called me, motherf***er.  Who the f*** are you and why the f*** did you wake me up over this?"

So help me, if I don't get a new modem without a hassle today, I am going to tell them where they can shove my old one.
