I'm an amateur actor studying theatre in university. In early transition I took a break from acting because I read as a 15 year old boy. After a lot of work on my voice and giving the T some time, I'm successfully doing really well in a production of Sweeney Todd (got called back for Tobias and ended up in the ensemble and the solo bass in the quintet - my voice is "different", I don't necessarily sound like a bass even though I can reach bass notes, but my "different" sound is perfect for musical theatre), played Snug/Lion in Midsummer Night's Dream last year and apparently I was very memorable, and in my Shakespeare acting class this year have successfully pulled off Romeo and am working on Iago.
It took a lot of work, especially my singing voice, and I still have work to do, but it's definitely possible to transition and act male roles successfully.
As for accepting, at least in the productions and classes I've been a part of, being transgender is not a liability at all. A friend of mine who sits on audition panels says it makes me "unique" and "interesting". Which are good things at least in stage acting.
