I am having so much trouble finding a doctor. At first I was going to go the traditional route of finding a therapist, but quickly found that there are no therapist in my area that A) deal with transgender issues and B) accept my insurance.

So I started looking for a clinic and found the Mazzoni clinic which I was totally jazzed about, but discovered that my insurance does not cover out of state. I'm in NJ and that clinic is in PA.

I have been trying to find someone since January, hoping that I would be on hormones (or at the very least on the path to get hormones) by the start of the summer.

Does anyone know of any doctors in NJ that accept informed consent? Or has anyone medically transitioned in NJ who can give me some pointers? Please. I'm at the end of my rope here.

endos here in NJ are very very very scarce. us NJ people have to go to either PA or NY to get treatment unless you luck out like i did and actually have a primary who is willing to treat you. very hard to survive here in NJ

Quick update: I talked to Mazzoni again about their sliding scale for people who don't have insurance (or insurance that doesn't work) and it looks like I'm going to be able to afford it. I don't want to say for sure that it's all worked out now until I get my first appointment scheduled (they're having computer issues so they told they'd call back later when their computers are better). But yeah, it's looking hopeful. :)

Congratulations :)

On the first link above, there are two endos from NJ...
you might additionally ask them if they accept your insurance...

Depending on which end of NJ you're in or access to transportation, in NYC there is Callen-Lorde.

There are T-friendly endo's in NJ. It takes a fair amount of networking to find them. I think on the IPG site under resources (http://www.ipgcounseling.com/resources/transgender-resource-guide) they list some endo's and GP's. I use a GP who is LGBT friendly and had no issues at all with HRT. But, with the CYA "Get out of Jail Free" letter from my therapist.

I live in NJ and I go to Beth Israel in NYC. Callen-Lorde is excellent but their wait times are high. There is also APICHA but they are geared more to Asian/Pacific islander (however I was told they will take anyone).

Anyway Beth Israel is pretty good, the key providers are from the community (the main doc is openly gay and the nurse practitioner is openly trans and they feature them in the videos). Plus they take most insurance. I have had very good experiences with them, not just for HRT but primary care. Look for "Beth Israel LGBT center" and they are on 14th street.
