Hi,
I am currently receiving insurance through my employer. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield, and although they cover transgender related services, my insurance provider stated that my employer decided to exclude those services. I've talked with my doctor and they've agreed to write me a letter as to why a hysto is a necessity. The problem is everything says I'm male. I've been on hormones for five years, so really there is no way to say that I'm not. The only thing that doesn't say I'm male is my birth certificate because I can't change it without surgery.
Has anyone ever had an experience with this? I have contact information for someone who "fights" with insurance companies to get them to cover things for people who are transgender. I have yet to contact him, since I just got that information today and I'm just trying to get a feel for what others may have struggled with in the process.
Another concern I have is disclosing this information to my employer. I pretty much don't tell anyone unless they need to know, and my employer is really the last I would like to disclose too. My doctor said I might have to tell my employer in order to figure things out with the insurance company, but I would really like to avoid that.
Anyone have any advice, thoughts?
