One day asking to be called he and the next day she. If that is true then the daycare workers are in an impossible situation.
Why is that an "impossible situation"?
I've known children who come up with a new name for themselves every few days. The adults around them make a reasonable effort to go along with it, but don't make a big deal about it.
Seems to me you handle gender switches the same way.
Daycare worker: "Let's get your coat hung up, Helen--"
Genderfluid child: "I'm not Helen, I'm Harry!"
DCW: (shrug) "Okay,
Harry, let's get your coat hung up..."
(later)
DCW: "Helen, it's snack time."
GFC: "Don't you remember? I'm
Harry."
DCW: "Okay, Harry, it's still snack time."
Seems simple to me. Of course, you have to think children are worth a reasonable amount of respect, which many/most adults don't.
