Rude and ignorant therapist?

I went through some therapy sessions last year because of mental issues (depression, anxiety). At some point I discussed dysphoria and stuff with this therapist, she asked questions too so I could not avoid it.

Well, I want to know if I overreacted, but I still agree with my own decision to dump her. I don't really think I overreacted. I was way too polite instead. She didn't take me seriously. When I told her I've been having these feelings since I was around 4 she didn't believe me. I mentioned having long hair before (but always a male image, just with long hair) and she asked me if I could bring her pictures of when I had long hair because "curiosity". She even asked about my chest size. All of this just made me sick and I never went back to her for another session and will never ever go back.

Now I am thinking about a more in-depth discussion with my a psychologist who has been seeing me for years and is professional, polite, nice and also knows me well. I want to see her because I want to talk more about my dysphoria and get help with handling my future and my family when I will start the transitioning process (I don't know when and I don't know where, but I will as soon as possible).

Thoughts? Would you dump a therapist like that too?

Jossam,

Finding a therapist to work with is like finding a friend or dating. Some personalities you click with, others grate. If you find something about the therapist is putting you off, you can move on. I can't tell you if they were rude or ignorant because I wasn't there. However, I can say, find one that works for you.

It does not sound like this is a gender therapist. If they aren't, you might try one to discuss your issues, as they have a back ground in those issues.  General therapists often need to do additional work to be well versed in dysphoria.

Good luck. Hope you get what you are looking for.

With warmth,

Joanna

hen I told her I've been having these feelings since I was around 4 she didn't believe me.

Based on this alone, I would have kicked her to the curb.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

You're not there to serve your therapist's needs.  The therapist is there to serve your needs.  If she can't understand you, or is judgmental, or is rude and pushy, fire her and find one who suits your needs.
