Would breasts grow if someone had imbalanced hormones?

Having high testosterone does not mean that a person won't grow breast tissue. I was super high in free testosterone most of my life, and had almost zero estrogen, but still had a bit of breast development early in life. I am xx intersex, and when I started HRT, my free testosterone was 775, which is high even for a genetically male person, but the moment I started the minimum E dosage, my boobs sprang to life, so to speak. I had a full A cup in a bit over a month, and a full B cup at three months, all long before my T levels were finally suppressed by blockers and HRT.

  A lot of cis males do grow "moobs" starting in their mid-50's due to declining T levels as they age, not pretty. Some teenage boys do the same as their T levels fluctuate. The latter was a subject in my 1960's sex ed class. The doctor who instructed us, told us that was no threat and that would go away. That never happened to me. I had no boobs and very little muscle mass. I was compared to Twiggy, a super thin model from the 1960's. That gal since filled out. I had to wait until I went on E at age 58.

I've been a borderline a-b cup since I was 15 when puberty stopped and I quit aging like my age group, I'm 51and can pass for my 30s. I was lucky i had enough testosterone to father 3 kids, finally I found a Dr I felt I could be open with and she wants to do a hormone test along with my normal blood work. I'm torn if I have to do some type of hrt, me I want to embrace more of Cheryl and my wife would prefer t which would kill me. So its going get interesting.

It's a balance game. High testosterone with low estrogen promotes masculine characteristics, low testosterone with high estrogen promotes feminine characteristics. As my hormones were all over the map when I was younger, I grew up with characteristics from both ends.

Yes! My experience sounds very similar to Chloe. I have xxy chromosomes (Klinefelter syndrome) and my t and e levels have been all over the place since I was a teenager. I'm a 34 C, but since starting hrt 2 weeks ago, I am already seeing extra growth, wohoo!

I don't think breast tissue would develop that strongly if you had lots of T still.  There's no breast tissue in moobs though or we are talking about two different conditions. Most overweight guys develop moobs or keep them after losing weight but it's fat not breast tissue. Some people just carry weight there

If I may ask, how is it that you have had such impressive breast growth without E? That totally rocks, again, I am sooo jealous, omg! One reason I ask is because I have an XXY relative that was raised as male, but he was dosed with T for several years before he was an adult and chose to stop. He said he hated the way he felt on it, and he went from looking very femme as a child to looking like a cave-man after T. 'He' sometimes seems to indicate he is unsure of his actual gender, especially since learning my story and seeing me as I am now. I am wondering if XXY people in general respond more favorably to either E or T than the general population. If my relative were to decide that he wanted to transition, knowing his body would respond to E well would truly be a comfort. Sorry if I am being too nosy..

Some women who are born XY but insensitive to androgen, fully or partly, will grow breasts and often their breasts will be quite big despite their low levels of E. This is because androgen (testosterone) strongly inhibits breast growth and when androgen is absent or the body does not respond to it, breast tissue begins to grow even if E is low. There is always some E in the body, through T conversion.

Fat tissue contains aromatase which is the enzyme that converts testosterone to estradiol so that as men age, they tend to get fatter and so more estradiol is produced locally in tissues. This combined with lower T levels as one ages = moobs!
