How come I've heard some people say that drinking alcohol while on HRT is an absolute no? I mean I drink on it and nothing's happened.. why is  it so "bad"? Is it even dangerous?

A side effect of estrogen pills is liver damage, compounding that with alcohol isn't a good plan. There should be no problem on patch or injection though, as it doesn't cause the same problems for whatever reason. Obligatory I'm not a doctor, just done a lot of obsessive googling.

Probably not a good idea while changes are happening either since it may have an effect on them too

The liver processes toxins and estrogen can put a strain on the liver. Alcohol also places strain on the liver and excessive intake can result in liver failure over time. An occasional drink shouldn't matter but if you are a regular heavy drinker, HRT isn't going to help. What is your risk factor? It depends on the person as some are more sensitive than others. The reason for your regular blood test is to check your liver function and spot problems before they become serious.

See that's the only thing I thought might be bad about drinking. But, once in a while wouldn't be bad would it? I'm a social drinker, so I drink maybe 2 weekends out of the month. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

I just had tests done a couple weeks ago (when I started HRT) and everything was A-OK!! Liver was perfectly healthy. I'm also young (20), so i don't know if that plays a factor.

I am not a doctor so you should discuss limits with your doctor. If your liver is in good shape your consumption shouldn't be a problem but that's only guess work.

Moderate drinking won't kill your liver if it's healthy. Being young helps in that you haven't had time expose to your liver to things like prolonged heavy drinking.

I can't see the harm in that, but I'm not a physician. I had to dial it back pretty steep though, as I was a pretty heavy drinker. No liver problems yet, but I didn't want to push the limit. lol In all seriousness even certain vitamins can cause liver damage. Under your doctors care, you should have nothing to be afraid of.

Taking estrogen by patch or im injection reduces the load on the liver by a fact of 10 ot more and so should have negligible effect on the liver.

I've found, however taking progesterone really cuts down my tolerance for alcohol and limits me to one drink and even that one may hit me pretty hard with feeling poorly the following day.
