Any other conspiracy theory nuts?

I get a royal kick out of conspiracy theories. Some make me laugh like crazy, some make me think that the person who thought that one up should be locked in a rubber room, and some I whole heartedly agree with.

I picked up a time life book on conspiracy theories recently and some just make me go "HUH?".

There's a short list of randoms at the beginning of the book of the most widely known.


They include:


5% believe that Paul McCartney died in a 1966 car crash and was replaced with a look alike.
37% believe that global warming is a hoax perpetuated by scientists and politicians.
21% believe a UFO crashed in Roswell NM in 1947 and that the US government covered it up.
28% believe that a shadowy group of power elites conspires to rule us all thru a global authoritarian government called the New World Order.
20% believe there is a link between childhood vaccines and autism.
7% believe the moon landing was faked.
29% believe in aliens.
14% believe the CIA introduced crack cocaine into the inner cities in the 1980's.
9% believe the government adds fluoride to our water for sinister reasons.
4% believe our society is controlled by shape shifting "lizard people" who have assumed human form and gained political power.
5% believe airplane contrails are chemical plumes deliberately sprayed by the government.
51% say larger conspiracies were at work in the assassination of JFK.
15% believe that the medical and pharmaceutical industries create new diseases for financial gain.
11% believe that the US government allowed the September 11 attacks to happen so that there would be an excuse to restrict civil liberties, and to go to war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
15% believe the government adds mind controlling technology to television broadcast signals.
6% believe Osama bin Laden is still alive.

That is just the short list from the front of the book. It goes heavier into detail about several of them and others further into the book.

I personally believe a few of the ones I have just listed. Maybe I'm crazy. But I'm curious, what do you guys think on the subject? Are there any you believe? Not just from the ones I listed, but others as well?

Or am I just a nutjob that needs to read something more substantial and enlightening? Wait, is that a conspiracy? Are you guys trying to make me look crazy? Or are you trying to make me look crazy? Perhaps you want people to think I'm crazy.

There are two on the list that could truthful depending on how there are defined and one I have been spend several years studying that is absolutely truthful. My statement is based on facts and not emotions. While I haven't looked into everything on the list I have looked into many of the items and I would agree that they are false.

I prefer conspiracy analyst. The term conspiracy theory is often used to stifle discussion or discredit someone. FWIW, some conspiracies are true. Look up Lionel, aka Michael Lebron. He talks eloquently on the subject.

The Kurt Cobain is one of the mentioned ones later in the book. That article also includes Michael Jackson, Jim Morrison, Tupac Shakur, Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, Robin Williams, Marilyn Monroe, Brandon Lee, Princess Diana, and a lot of others.

Some say they are alive, some say it was(n't) suicide, some say they are laying low waiting to make their comeback. Any Kaufman is on that list I believe.

As for some that I personally believe:

the '47 Roswell UFO story.
the 9-11 theory, tho I believe the US played a bigger part in it than just allowing it to happen.
DEFINITELY believe in aliens. I mean I can't believe that in the vastness of space and the cosmos, that life is contained to this tiny insignificant trillionth of a fraction sized speck of dust. It just isn't feasible for me.
The Illuminati isn't too far fetched for me to believe.
I still think bin Laden is alive. (don't get me started.)
I believe the moon landing never happened. (Again, don't get me started.)

CIA and crack cocaine

That's just stuff from the list I mentioned. That's not saying that those are every last conspiracy theory. Just a quick and dirty list of a couple of the most common.

The CIA has done both drug experiments and sold drugs for money and probably intelligence. As far as JFK goes, why bury the Warren commission data? FWIW, a congressional investigation in the late 70's found it wasn't so simple. What I will say is that most people have too much respect for authority and accept political narratives much too readily and believe that government has our best interests at heart. Sociology 101 and 102 should be mandatory for everyone and also a good primer on narcissistic psychopathy and how that fits in with leadership/politics.

I have an old friend who is into all of that stuff, but most particularly anything that Alex Jones talks about.  Definitely a bit of a creepy cult like feel to this guy's admiration of Alex.

My personal favorite of the bunch:


That conspiracy claim is so full of holes that it is laughable.  "Oh it's a slow effect item" "they're nano-engineered particles!" (what does this even mean?)  And somehow these particles defy physics and allow you to pack them all into a plane without running out of room or exceeding MTOW despite having a full load of passengers and cargo.

I don't deny that the Earth is warming, I just have to ask why people see it as a big deal. 11,000 years ago North America was under a mile of ice. Nobody complains about that global warming trend. Long story short, the next ice age will come no matter what we do, and it will eliminate all traces of human existence except the artifacts we left on the moon and space.

The thing about conspiracy theories is that any evidence against them is taken to be part of the conspiracy.  Therefore, they are not falsifiable.

I think the reason people start these beliefs is just to see how much controversy they can create. Or they're looking for something to complain about and to make that complaint a fact and to gain followers of it. Like the vaccines and autism. I received all my vaccines as a baby, and I don't have autism. That's something you're born with, it's not a virus like the flu.

And some I think are either for shock value, or just to make that person laugh. Just look at how many people there are right now that have decided the earth is flat.

There's no actual evidence for this one - and it likely would have leaked while one of them was on drugs/drunk.

37% believe that global warming is a hoax perpetuated by scientists and politicians.

Some people also think the world is flat, never mind the science..

21% believe a UFO crashed in Roswell NM in 1947 and that the US government covered it up.

Possible, but unlikely unless kept secret to an incredibly small number of people..

I'm surprised the number isn't higher. The chances of the only life in the universe being here on Earth are likely to be quite small.

Not impossible, but why?

I don't think any of these really have legs. For example, to truly keep a secret, you can't tell anyone.. Every person who knows causes an exponential increase in the risk of it getting out.. Going from some studies I read a few years back, the Moon Landing has to be real, there were way too many people involved for it to be faked - mathematically/statistically someone will have talked.. Same for many of theses "theories"..

"37% believe that global warming is a hoax perpetuated by scientists and politicians." this one really surprised me...I guess if you don't live with the effects every day then it is not your reality and easy to dismiss.

This one doesn't surprise me, the best explanation I read was that, JFK was shot by his own secret service man accidentally as he tried to get a bead on Oswell" The full explanation is far longer and way more plausible and accounts for the crazy bullets without there being anyone else but Oswell.

"11% believe that the US government allowed the September 11 attacks to happen so that there would be an excuse to restrict civil liberties, and to go to war in Afghanistan and Iraq" This one I thought was interesting because I think if you asked people instead, "if they were happy with the official explanation" as things clearly don't appear to add up to the official story your percentage would be way higher.

"7% believe the moon landing was faked"... this and 9/11 is where size and human nature defeat us and by that I mean in the case of 9/11 and the moon landing the scale of the operation required to pull it off and the numbers of people needing to be in on it, someone would have talked by now...surely?
