Why do guys turn into idiots around each other?

A little bit ago I had to go get my brother from the hospital. He had dislocated his shoulder. He dislocated it car surfing. That's when you stand on a moving car and ride it like a surfboard. If my brother was 12 I might understand being that stupid but he's 21. When I asked him why he would do something that totally stupid he said because his friends were doing it and they dared him to. I might have known that. His friends are always doing really stupid stuff and when Tyler is with them it's like his intelligence drops sharply. One time they were zapping each other with my stun gun another time they decided to ride a snowboard down the stairs. And once they were daring each other to put pepper spray on their tongues. When a group of guys are together they all get stupid! Why?? It's a mystery to me. I've seen the same thing with other groups of guys.  So they dared Tyler to do it, so what. If he refuses what happens? He has to turn in his membership to the guy club? It amazes me. When other guys dare a guy to do something they usually will do it. Even if it's totally stupid and dangerous. It's insane! My brother said he figured I would laugh at him when he told me how he hurt himself. I told him that realizing my brother is as dumb as a bag of hair was more like something to cry about.

I guess I can't go anywhere until my dad gets home. If I leave Tyler unattended he might go running into traffic or try to put a fork into the electric socket. I guess I have to keep him out of the shower too or he might start staring up at the shower head and drown himself.

Yea, im not to sure why that happens. Maybe they want to see who can be the bigger center peice of attention? But hey, somethings being stupid can make you rich and famous.. look at the people in the movie Jackass....

While guys have always done things on a dare etc., things to be getting dumber lately.  Car surfing is one thing I'd never even heard of until a few years ago.  Another recent, incredibly stupid activity is swarms of motorcycles interfering with traffic, pulling wheelies on public roads and more.

I hear you. The most incredably stupid thing I have witnessed while driving 70 mph was watching 5 guys on crotch rockets doing wheelies at 85 - 90 MPH. But I have also witnessed first hand, being assaulted in an outhouse by knuckleheads with BB guns shooting through the vents.

An outhouse?? When were you in an outhouse? Weren't those like from over a hundred years ago? What's a outhouse like. Is it just a big hole with a wood shelter around it? I know it doesn't flush so it must smell nasty! And how do you clean up without toilet paper? Sorry for all the questions, Ive just always wondered what a outhouse was like.

I figured it probably had something to do with testosterone.  I was talking to my boyfriend and told him what my brother had done. I was expecting him to agree with me how stupid it was but he said " oh I've done car surfing. It's fun."  I give up.

Don't give up girl! Tell him how u feel but unfortunately the boys will push Him to man up. My only advise to chill him out would maybe show him how he can really man up with You! Just my 2 cents girl.   I think that testosterone rush would be better! Hope I didn't over step on that one Julia?

As I have said a million times, I never fit in. As a teenager I always knew that when a pretty girl came around the boys' personalities would change drastically. I noticed that they immediately started talking "tougher" and louder as if trying to impress the girl. One time the guys noticed that I walked away when one of these girls walked into a room. They asked where I was going. I said, "Well, every time a girl comes around, you guys start acting different. I'll come back when she's gone." This freaked them out for some reason. They had to know that they changed! Why do I have to tell the obvious? I REALLY stopped fitting in after that.

When I was really young, a bunch of us boys (brother, cousins) got bow and arrow sets for Christmas. After shooting targets for a while, one of the "tough" ones started a very dangerous game. We were to take turns shooting an arrow straight up into the air as high as we could shoot it. The first boy to "chicken out" and run to dodge the returning arrow was labelled the "chicken." Very dangerous and stupid.

My old hillbilly aunt lived in a house that had an outhouse. You are lucky if you never had to use one. It was just a square wooden shack with a wooden "seat" inside that had a 6" hole in the middle. You simply did your business and the poop would just drop to the bare ground below. Two things I remember are snakes and the horrid smell. Just used store bought toilet paper. Old timers used catalogs and corncobs!

In remote areas they are dug into the ground. Others have a 25-50 gallon tank attached and are vaccumed out weekly or more oftern depending on use. This one was in the Angeles National Forest near Wrightwood. Alcohol more often that not is the cause. It certainly was this time/

That's testosterone for you. Any where from puberty to late 30s is a dangerous time to be in a group of men.  It makes them do stupid things, sometimes dangerous. 

As for the porta-potty, to me an outhouse is completely different. I had to use an outhouse one winter in Montana when visiting my grandmother.  So glad they got plumbing the next time I visited.

This is right. An outhouse is an old-fashioned hand-built wood-boarded square shack that is usually permanently built on one spot far in the backyard of a residence (usually in the old days before indoor plumbing). Just a seat/bench with a "stink hole." No sink or other facilities inside. A porta-potty, on the other hand, is almost always factory built (by the thousands) of plastic and fiberglass and is portable by a special truck from place to place for public use like outdoor concerts, construction sites, etc. They are strictly commercial and temporary and usually placed several together in groups -- we've all seen them at events. They stink too but not as bad as outhouses since chemicals are used in the fluids to kill bacteria and to un-stink the thing as much as possible....

Pretty much the same thing. They were called outhouses because they were outside down a path. An out building on a property. Today they are mostly port a pots, honey buckets, etc  Rural areas still have outhouses in the original configuration.

I has to do with bravery, strength and the ability to endure things. In ancient times, brave young men went to war, or hunting. Now, they do things like car surfing. Think about it as a duel from 200 years ago. It didn't matter wheather you lived or died, the important part was being brave enough to accept. If not, you would loose your honor, which was a terrible thing.

If you translate that to modern times, it doesn't matter if your brother couldn't surf the car, but he tried. He would be a "chicken" if not. And it's not nice to be the chicken in a group of boys.
