Today, we enjoy a much better understanding of our condition and proper medically supervised HRT is not an issue for most people. This was not always the situation. When people ask me about herbal or black market HRT, I always try to talk them into proper HRT. Medically supervised HRT is safe and effective and generally costs much less than herbal or black market products of dubious quality.

Hey Katie! Congrats! I'm super jealous, I'm also in the UK and you're ahead of me :D But why would it be an extra £200 per month? Hormones don't cost that much, do they...?

I'm not at Northampton GIC,  but I've several friends who are. There is also a thread on the site here too.

Im on HRT prescribed through my NHS gp and i only have to pay for the prescription which is £8.70 per prescription and my doctor combined 2 month HRT into one prescription so it works out at £4.35 a month.

That's brilliant news Katie

I am on HRT privately and my monthly prescriptions for E & AA only come to about £15-20.  Basic blood tests, which are usually required every 3 months in the first year, are around the £50-60 mark. Hopefully you'll get full support from your GP but if not, I'd definitely query the £200

Re.  Blood tests,  my GP was happy to do these for me on the NHS,  I just had to pay £10 to get a copy of the results.

Hi thanks all, I should read what I write I think - 200 for bloods if GP wont do them (I have a couple of Med issues that would need to be monitored as well I think) and yes, the prescriptions costs mentioned are right. Sorry was to full of myself to read what I put that night.
Hugz to you all

Only posting here as I cant find the post I read last night about talking to close friends at work which inspired me to as something similar as well.
I decided to talk to a close female colleague who I am quite friendly with, and as we have a good working relationship, are of a similar age (55) and have helped each other at work a lot.
Given I have never said anything to anyone outside wife and sons this was a big deal for me, so my choice had to be the right one. I explained my situation quickly, as she had been concerned for me as I am under a lot of stress at work and at home with the divorce (friendly one hopefully), especially about my TransGender status, the Dysphoria and where I was with my feelings and worries, the status of Doctor assessments etc, and she was absolutely so supportive all the way through, and wishing me well with going where I would be happier and a more complete person. We chatted for about 30 mins (her boss is away ill) until I had to go to another meeting (after clearing my eyes a bit..) at which point she gave her solemn word not to say or imply anything until I was ready to be more open at work (she has previously worked with me in confidence so I absolutely trust her). As a sort of clincher of confidentiality she shared some quite major personal issues with herself, and we actually ended with a hug wishing each other the best with our situations and that if either of us needed to talk then we would both make time.
I was somewhat flabbergasted and so happy at this outcome and that I had confirmed my first non-family friend as a transwoman (apprentice), and it has really built up my confidence as I do need to stop hiding all the time from the world. I will be cautious as well though. Baby steps...
So - A good day at the office!!

Came out to elder brother today and he has been supportive and not surprised.. - What was I worrying for?
He want to help with finance and stuff (organising mine) and says family most important no matter what (I broke down in tears at that point...).
Looks like my support network is bigger than I hoped for.
