Razors, razors, razors

Razors. Fellow sisters who have not completed facial hair removal or those that have that can give good advice. What are some good razors for the face? I appear to pass rather fine but I want a razor that can give me a real clean shave. I am using the cheap brands and I know this isnt how I should go about it. Any idea of good brands that get the job done for the whole day without either having to re-shave or shave 10 times in the same spot in the morning to be clean shaving??

I do not think such a razor exists because them dang hairs are going to grow. I used to attempt a self sacrifice but quit  after realizing it was a fruitless effort and irritation continued to be a problem. I don't have a dark beard bit no matter how close I shave, I know it is still there.
  Now I just throw my electric in my purse for a quick touch up before going into  where I'm going.

I like an old school safety razor.. One pass clearance and only 1 blade to possibly cause irritation. I used to use a straight-edge razor, but I don't have the confidence to keep my hand steady any more.

Initial cost may be a little high, but it's well worthwhile in the long run.

Everybody's facial hair grows at different rates. So some of us can get by with just a lite shave and others need a deep cutting.

That being said, any razor with more than 3 blades is considered to be a waste of money. The razors with 4 or 5 blades have little space between the blades and are hard to rinse clean. The blades will be sharp for the first few shavings, but the real effectiveness is later in the month. You should be able to get a blade to last at least 30 days with decent results. In my experience the name brand razors with 3 blades are the most effective and costs are reasonable and they last almost 30 days.

If your beard is really that tough, it's time to look into laser and electrolysis to thin out some of that unwanted hair.

I second the old school safety razor. Done right you can get the closest, least damaging shave possible with one. You can also recreate several scenes from Kill Bill if you get the wrong stuff. Do your research!

For the body?  Yes.  On the face, not so much.  The head is too large to work closely around the nose and mouth. 

I'm post electrolysis and I just have 10-20 hairs that need to be shaved every couple of weeks.  A cheap Bic works fine for me, but never would have back in the day.

I could have sworn they were talking face. I dont have personal experience on that one.

I do have this norelco trimmer thing that you can press against the skin and it cuts hair, pretty close for the really tough spots even a bic wont fit in. I love that thing. My only complaint is its not super close by any means.

I posted about the Venus razor. My brother ran out of his Mach whatever and I gave him one of my Venus razors. He loved it and said it was a really close shave. He uses them for his face all the time now.

I use these too for face and body. Costco sell them by the case which is better value and lasts me a while. [emoji5]

Since my brother and dad started using them I get the Walmart version called equate.  There is no difference between those and real Venus razors which are WAY more expensive. Shaving my legs with one it will last me like 2 months. But with both of them using them on their faces every day that would have gotten totally expensive.

Straight razor, I've been using (the same) one for over 40 years. When you stop having the shave the face, they work well for legs and bikini area also.

After trying many, many razors, I also found the Wal-Mart Equate version of the Gillette Venus to be best for me. I tried three blades, but five blades shave my face closer with way more ease and comfort. It gives my face a slick, smooth feel, but my beard isn't heavy so this may not be typical. The price difference between the number of blades on the Equate brand is nothing. It's not the best for the mustache area because it's too large to get the area under the nose well. I have body hair like a 12 year old girl, so I can't speak to how it works on body hair.

While nothing is close enough to remove my dark hair in pale skin beard shadow, I do get a 95% smooth shave with an equivalent (from what I can tell) to the Venus Silk, the Schick Hydro 5. They have the same lotion dispenser head and blade count I believe. The Hydro 5 is designed for face, and the dispenser flips up for working under nose though I don't even need to do that. It works on body hair too very well, but the lotion dispenser runs out really, really quickly if you use it for that much area. (I've taken to keeping "empty" heads to switch out and use for body, fresh ones for face/sensitive areas.)

Far and away the best thing I've found though is to use coconut oil as a shave oil with it. I started using it about a week ago now and it has been a massive change. Prior, if I wanted a smooth shave it was an ordeal of irritation, in grown hair, and blood going everywhere (but that is mostly me and my platelet issues). Just some basic coconut oil tossed into the mix was night and day, and not only is the shave far smoother I haven't had any irritation and only minimal nicks and in-grown hairs (which this Tend Skin stuff I bought seems to be doing the trick on).

I used to use the twin blade cheapies from Gillette or Schick. They were inexpensive and awesome. Actually better than the 3 or four or 5 or 20 blade models they ream you for. Now he knock off cheapies...? not so much, steer clear of those. Anyways, when I wanted to get really super killer close and have my face feel like a babies butt, I would take 2 of em' into the shower where I'd sit my self down, let the water run down my head and proceed to shave. First pass down with the grain and second with the second razor up against the grain. Since you constantly have fresh water flowing over your face, you shouldn't get the dreaded razor rash. Once you're finished, run your hand over your face and when you can find rough areas, work on em' till they're gone. Out of the shower and I'd splash witch hazel on my face. Voilà...I'd have a totally girly kisser....feel wise that is! I'd get sooooo smooth you'd think I didn't have a beard, least for 6 hours or so. And I had a pretty heavy beard so it'll be easier for those of you more blessed or follicly challenged or whatever you prefer to refer to it as.

Well thanks for the replies everyone! I will be sure to look into them all. I am quite interested in this Venus one, is there a specific set or is it just generic Venus? Also, I have thought about the Schick aswell. I had one friend tell me about an Edwin Jagar... Is that worth looking into or would that be a waste of money ya think??

I support the straight razor. It takes more time, more technique, and you take the risk of beheading yourself, but it doesn't get smoother than that.

I use a Gillette Fusion 5 (power) and have never gotten a closer or smoother shave with anything else.

It also makes a huge difference to use it in the shower with hot water and soap.  There are never any cuts or abrasions that way.

I have posted about this company before but they manufacture for s fee different brands. You can also buy direct from them at great pricing and they have amazing razors. I have used all the ones listed in previous posts and still stick with the ones made by this company.

I used to use Gillette but was completely fed up with the ridiculous prices. Then I switched to 800 razors, and then eventually to Dollar Shave Club. It's one of those online monthly subscription things, and the price is so much better than buying anything in a store. I'm also very satisfied with the quality of new razors. I cannot actually tell a difference between the twin razor and the triple or quadruple or more blades. But I opted for the twin razor because I believe fewer blades crossing your skin is probably better for you, especially in terms of razor burn. Also, despite the fact that I wish to have the closest shave for obvious reasons, I cannot go against the grain, for the same reason it would be extremely masochistic to shave Against the Grain in the nether regions. Sadly I cannot shave Against the Grain anywhere on my body, because I am extremely prone to ingrown hairs. And have many scars as a result. I'm hoping one day to get full body electrolysis, and maybe even scar removal if that's possible. In the meantime I stick to Dollar Shave Club twin razor, going with the grain.
