I have really short hair but I want to grow it out to at least shoulder length. Do you get hair cuts while its growing long? Or does this just make it take longer? I really hate messy hair cuts and don't want to look unkept while its growing.
Maintaining long hair is not an easy job. It takes more time and effort. For example, it used to take more than 1 hour to dry out my hair when I had shoulder-length hair. Now I have relatively short hair and I just blow my hair with the hair dryer for about 3-5 min, then letting hair dried with natural air.
But it will be a pleasure to keep long hair until you are tired of it.
Many styles are available for short or awkward-stage hair. For example, the following style is popular here and my little daughter has the same style:

I am also targeting that kind of hair style, which is easy to maintain.
To avoid messy hair, avoid chemicals and treatments as much as possible. In my case, I apply the following simple product just before drying my hair after shampooing.
https://www.amazon.com/Biosilk-Therapy-Serum-Packaging-Ounces/dp/B0007CXX82?th=1This product is not so much expensive, and does not require 10 or 15 min treatment time. Some hair dressers used to recommend me far more expensive products, which typically require a 15 min treatment time. I can not afford to do that every 3 days.
And finally, in my case, money does good for my hair. I used to straighten my hair at hair salon, which costed about US$ 300 per session every 6 months. Yes. At that time, my hair looked really great. But just one visit to a cheap hair salon spoiled all of my hair, urging me to have my current short hair. It costed just about US$ 40. I will never spare money at hair salon.
