Hello I am a boy who wants to start cross dressing as the first step in a potential transition and I was wondering if I could get some help with hair. I can't grow my hair as I'm in school so I want to get a wig. Unfortunately I have a very low budget so I was wondering if anybody new what the best wigs were for around £20 or less. They don't have to be amazing I just want ones that look ok. Thanks
X Maria

I guess from the way you have stated your budget that you're in the UK.  There are two sources of cheap wigs I can think of.  If you live in, or near, an area with a high ethnic minority population such as Brixton and other areas of South London, you'll often find loads of shops with cheap wigs and some of them are pretty good and available within your budget - ironically the amount of competition has driven prices down too.  Many areas of South London have a number of such shops with plenty of choice.  The other option is fancy dress shops - not quite as good as from the ethnic hair shops but adequate if you just want to see what you look like.

Finally, don't be scared about going in to buy one.  The people in the shop are more interested in your money than your motivation for buying a wig and you can always use the 'I need a wig for a fancy dress party' excuse.

Good luck on your journey.

I hate to be the voice of dissent, but I know a great deal about wigs and I can enlighten you a bit here. First of all, the very best way to have everyone who looks at you say "there's a crossdresser" is to wear a cheap wig. Cheap wigs tend to look cheap and phony. About the best you can do is get a very dark one in a simple style and try to not to get too close to anyone.

If I were you I would reconsider some way to grow my hair out some. A lot of women wear shorter styles that can easily be transformed to a more manly or womanly look. Look at photos online or talk to a stylist.

I don't know just where you live, but in much of the world, longer hairstyles on males seems to be acceptable in schools these days. You might have to deal with a grumbly administrator or two or your parents, but having long hair is a wonderful experience that shouldn't be denied to any young person who wishes it. And trust me, you want to grow it out now while you're young and still have plenty of it.

Wigsbuy is where I got two of my wigs. I don't need them anymore as I have grown my hair out. They are real hair I bought for around $200. No they are not the best wigs but they do look better than most, and they have a large selection. Both times my wigs came in about two weeks after ordering. Otherwise there are tons of synthetic hair wigs and extensions.
