I watched a lot of videos over the years. They were very helpful in showing various techniques. I didn't have a favorite, I watched many different people discussing different techniques to achieve a variety of looks.
What I found was that I would research a certain look that I wanted, but when I tried it it didn't look right at all. I love the whole "smoky eyes" look, but on me, it turns out to look like a sleep-deprived raccoon.
What I do is search the internet for pictures of women that I consider beautiful, especially celebrities. They have professional makeup artists, so I study their faces to see how that look was achieved. What shade is their lipstick, eye shadow, eyeliner, blush, etc? Then I try to do that look on me and see how it turns out.
If it looks pretty good, check it in different lighting conditions. Sunlight is different than the light on a makeup mirror, which is different from the fluorescent light in the kitchen, or the lamps in the living room. I had posted some pictures somewhere that showed the difference between indoor and outdoor light, but I can't seem to find that post. Sorry.
