To be absolutely blunt, no, true love does not come around but once. Although mind you I am thinking more of an eternal context. Some lives.. well, we end up being busy for one reason or another. But there is time enough for it all, even if not this one right this now. -- Which I confess is a comfort to me as this self really does not see any such hope for this life. But, never say never

I never understood why people buy into the "only one" saying.

It is based on the idea that you will find a person, marry, and live happily ever after. It happens, but for a large percentage of people it's a fairy tale.

I refuse to believe that in all of the people on this planet that there is only one per person. Especially since the disproportion of men to women means someone will be left out or get two.

I can tuthfully say no.  My true love died seventeen years ago.  My true love is with me at Susan's today, and if such a thing is possible, I love her even more than the one who died.

I would think that true love happens when two people are in the right state of mind at the same time, in the right place, and in circumstances that are appropriate in order for it to take place. So, my personal opinion is that it is very possible for a person to have more than one opportunity for a true love.    Hey, I should know that! LOL

I truly believe that no.  There are many times in a persons life that they find true love.  But true long lasting love does only come once.

Possibly, but what comfort can that give to people like nero and me where our true loves have died?  Is there hope for the future?  I had pretty much given up on true love years ago.  That was something that other people found.  All I had was ashes, ashes of her dead body, and even those were burried in the ground.  There were people I loved, and I still love all of them.  But true love?  No.  I felt I had to be satisfied with companionate love.  All that changed when I met Ellie.  There is noone else like her.

Of course not, Nero.  Unless you are convinced it does, and never open yourself up to other opportunities.  I think a lot of people who take that track do just that, close themselves off because they think that a new love would somehow be dishonoring to the first, or because they were so comfortable being comfortable that they are afraid to take new risks.

Now if you are asking about yourself, I would simply ask you what you are doing to put yourself in a position to meet others and develop relationships.  I think the answer is up to you.

An excellent point, Kristi.  After having been with my love for ten years I knew her well enough to know what she would have thought about the way I closed in on myself after she died, and she would not have been pleased.  And she would have very pointedly told me about it.

I don't think there is only one true love for us all.

I do think every relationship is unique.  And if you lose a true love, you will never find that relationship again.  It is possible that no relationship you do have will be as satisfying or healthy or whatever as that one.  And if it is, that only complicates things because of the "dishonouring" factor as has already been pointed out.

I've had 3 great loves in my life so far!  I don't know if I'm good for 4 more but I'm sure I've at least 1 more in me.  When I make up my mind that I want to be in love someone has always appeared.  It's not magic, it's that I've openned myself up to the possibility and I'm willing to take the risk that love involves.  When it happens it does feel a lot like falling!

I think there are different levels of love. True love is loving someone's whole heart and soul and that can definitely happen more than once with someone different each time, but it will be different each time also. The soul loves deeply and can love to a degree we can't understand. It's not made to experience the extreme emotions of true love only once because life gives us no guarentee's, consequently our souls make room for other great loves that may come our way.
