Trans suicide and satisfaction statistics

Does anyone know of any studies on the satisfaction rates and suicide rates of transexuals?  I'm looking for whatever is out there - untreated, pre-op, post-op, whatever.  As I posted in the coming out forum, I'm dealing with a friend who is very, VERY anti-transexual (apparently crossdressers are just fine for him).  I'd like to be able to actually cite studies to counter his misremembered statistics from 20 years ago.

I looked, but couldn't find anything.

Not sure how 'official' this is, but try the Transsexual Woman's Resource Page. It has some info on studies that have been done in the past. It also has pictures of both succesful and not-as-successful SRS surgery.

Last I heard, 20% of transsexuals commit suicide in attempting or during transition. However, the regret of surgery and suicide because of it is less then 1% of those who do it. If you want statistics on orientation, I recently ran a poll on the topic on the board that can be found here.

Feelings change, so such statistics I would not consider very reliable.
One minute one may be satisfied; a month later they may be not.
It just depends on the person.
It's an individual thing.

I think it's important here to clearly distinguish between suicide brought on by the condition and suicide brought on by the transition.

I would assume most suicides are pre-ops?  I know I considered it numerous times when depressed, not knowing why I was depressed, not recognizing it as depression, and not knowing what the heck was wrong with me, etc.  The only thing stopping me in college was my cat, who seemed to know to come sit on my lap and purr during those horrific times.  Later, I didn't because of my kids.  If only I had recognized my issues back then!

Do many post-ops have regrets and consider suicide?

The Praeger Handbook of Transsexuality gives a post op statistic of 1% FTM and 1 1/2% MTF dissatisfied post-op. There hasn't been any study done, to my knowledge, that proves that the Real Life Experience of a one year duration contributes to the high success rate post-op.
