Can music give you away?

Seriously, its been bugging me lately.

I'm pretty manly, and I look like a teenage boy, and I tend to have more of a masculine/deep voice.  The only thing that gives me away anymore is my name which is VERY girly, but even that hasn't seemed to set off any alarms lately.

And while I'm all manly and stuff... my music is not so much, lol.  I tend to LOVE listening to Darren Hayes and KD Lang along with some Dirty Vegas, Aqua, and Incubus, and lets not forget Avril and Evanescenece.  Oh! And Savage Garden if I'm feeling it at the time.  There's some country thrown in there and a little hard core rock, but not things like "I'm gonna eat your soul and stab you and your mom and then go punch something!!!  RAAAAHHH!!!"

No, not for me.  And it bugs my friends to the point where they have hidden my CD collection and left me with nothing but Pantera and some Trapt.  And its not like I'm anti rock, I'll listen to some songs that I like, but mostly I tend to lean towards things that the guys around me would never listen to.

I understand that music is music and you can't classify someone's sexual orientation or gender by it, but still I find myself forcing Disturbed and Slipknot on myself just so I can avoid the looks I get while I'm driving around with Darren Hayes blasting from the CD player in my truck.

Musical taste or lack thereof is not gendered. You like what you like. Listen to it. Anything else wouldn't be authentic.

Music does not mark your gender.  Just because you listen what your friends may think is 'girly' music.  Who cares.  We listen to the music that moves us, makes us think, makes us happy or makes us sad.

I happen to like a variety of music, and some of my music isn't very girl like, but does that me any less a woman?  No, just eclectic.

What is the point of doing that? There is no way in hell I would "force" myself to play a certain band or style of music just to avoid any stares. If people don't like it then screw them. You should play what you like.

I just think people need to increase their taste in music.  I mean, how cool is it to use Tetris sound effects as part of a song?  Seriously.

Then again, I'm almost always listening to Destroyer C or some other techno/trance.

Whilst it is my opinion that everything you have listed there is rubbish, I don't think any of it is particularly exclusive to either gender. Incubus and Evanescence are quite popular to a lot of guys I know, much to my chagrin.

Yea, I love singing My Immortal by Evanescence.
I had a friend come over once and was playing some music and she couldn't believe what I listened to.  She has assumed I would like metal or such, never the variety of stuff I actually have.
If ppl were hiding my stuff I wouldn't be calling them friends, it would be much more impolite words the mildest being "thieves".

Yeh lol  I myself I enjoy the more emotional but not screaming soft rock or rock.  My Immortal by Evanescence is actually one of my favorite songs lol, plus Here without you and Kryptonite by 3 doors down, some of Aerosmiths songs and a number of others who I don;t remember names of because I'm just not one of them people who don't really bother to rememeber names of songs most of time and who can't sing along to well lol

I'm really passionate about the things that I like, but I've never felt the need to squeal and whatnot. Just express how much I love something.

But in all honesty, I love all genres of music. I like things that can be considered 'girly', but I also like 'masculine sounding' music as well. And there are several female singers that I love, but I try not to let it get to me. I'm well rounded in music and if I'm confident in myself, no one questions it. Its how you carry yourself, not what you like.

Squealing isn't a need. It's a reaction. A reflex, almost. Which is why it was so hard for me to break.

I like musicals. A lot. I don't know if that's masculine or feminine. >_>; But they're cool, alright? Lol.

I never understood the squealing deal.  There are many things I think if really cool to do/meet or whatever but I never understood this squealing.  Sorry.   

Even if I met J.G. Hertzler I doubt ID be squealing lol... yabbering most likely though.   And hope get to meet him and maybe even drink beside him.  That would be really cool.

Then what, you're more of a man than me for not getting it? Honestly. Many girls don't do it either! And many gay men do. It hasn't got a thing to do with gender. It's called upbringing. In some families it's condoned, in others it isn't. Usually parents allow their little girls to squeal, but boys are told not to.

I don't think Aiden is trying to say hes more of a man by saying he doesn't understand squealing. Like you said yourself, some girls and some boys do it, others don't. Sometimes its difficult to understand a habit or a reflex when the other person doesn't have it.

Sorry, didn't mean for it to come off that way.  I was just saying it's something I don't really understand.  I tend to cringe when someone does it, but that's just me.  I don't handle high pitch sounds to well.

It's really not that high for me. I've been going through a pre-T boy puberty at least vocally. I hope my body isn't releasing extra T, or they'll give me estrogen. In any case, I can't go very high anymore. In fact, I've lost most of my ability to sing.

So wait... squeeling is girly now?  Crap... well then maybe it isn't my music that's giving me away.  I actually know plenty of guys who squeel, so I never bothered to think that was either girly or masculine, just something you do when you're excited or feeling giddy.

I understand that not just girls listen to girls singing and not all guys listen to guys singing, but I don't see many guys jamming out to Taylor Swift unless their girlfriend is in the car.
What I had listed on the first post was maybe 1% of everything I listen to.  I have everything from T-Pain to Shakira and AC DC to Trace Adkins.  What I was saying was that I prefer singers with smoother voices compared to someone with a deeper masculine voice.
And it would seem that everyone loves Evanescence... well, a few...

And I agree with Elwood, musicals do rock.
