I know it depends on the location and the therapist, probably. But I need to know at least a general price.

It really, really depends. The place I'm going, with an income-based sliding scale, is charging me $20/session and I'll probably need six sessions over 3 months to get my letter, so a grand total of $120. There are therapists who charge that much for a single session.

I'm looking into therapy through an LGBT center and I hope they can get me a letter for HRT, but the sliding scale is based on how much you can afford and since I'm unemployed it might even be free.

Would it ever be covered by medical insurance? In my state we have socialised healthcare; most of the time I don't pay anything when I see the doctor. Would this count?

My therapy is gonna 37$ total. The therapist said they might not even bother sending me a bill though. Fingers crossed! =D

is it normal for therapy to be that cheap?

Well the place I'm going to uses a sliding scale, it's that cheap because I'm unemployed. So if you find a community center or and LGBT center that has counseling services, that would be good :)

this will probably sound stupid, but what is a community center?

No...

The two places I've contacted (I need my letters, not "therapy") whack you for $125 per 50 minute session.  That's pretty harsh.

>-bleeped-<, I hope not every place is that expensive. I can't afford that

Well the community center place is a community run center. They have therapy and support groups for LGBT and probably other issues. I suggest you google search an LGBT center in your town or in the next town etc, somewhere you can get to for therapy, and contact them. Hopefully you find one with a sliding pay scale, or somewhere where they take some sort of insurane. The place I go also takes medical but I don't have that. I could probably get it though, but I don't need it.

In Boise ID I found a great therapist who charges $85 per, and she even meets on Sundays!!

the therapist who gets a lot of British MtFs through to surgery charges $190 half hour so count yourselves lucky.

I pay $100 per hour. My therapist is outstanding and is worth every penny as she specializes in GID and knows everyone in this area. My feeling is you go to a therapist to explore and understand your gender issues. My therapist knew early on that I was severely transgendered and did give me a HRT letter after 4 months, but I have been seeing her for several years and will continue to do so. This is a difficult journey and I could not have gotten rid of the guilt and fear without her.

It so far seems to me like it's usually $100 an hour (well, therapists don't do full hours. An hour is 50 minutes to a therapist.)

I still have to find a Phd shrink for letter #2.   :-\

I wish you luck.

I had two therapists.  One charged $100.00 per hour, the other didn't charge.  I was in therapy for three years, once per month.  Here in Ontario it was covered by the province.  Very fortunate.

I'm dropping upwards of $400/session, which is nosebleed high. But I feel I'm getting my money's worth.

Most of the places I called while checking around were around $100 without insurance (but most were covered by a pretty broad array of insurances... so the cost after insurance coverage varies depending on your insurance).

However, the therapist I ended up with in the long run (the only "official" gender specialist in town, as far as I'm aware) is flexible about payments. Technically she's charging me $35 per session (which is the same amount I would be paying after insurance coverage if my insurance covered her... which it doesn't, so she reduced the price for me), but as soon as I told her about my family's financial situation, she said it's okay if I can't pay sometimes.

So, long story short: In my case, the gender specialist ended up being less expensive than the run-of-the-mill counselors, even though they're covered by insurance and she isn't. Fortuitous sign? I certainly think so. 83
