Fabric softener. although some people use dryer sheets instead.

I actually sort my laundry by colours (dark, light, red, white, at least), use detergent and fabric softener, and a little bit of vinegar when washing lights or whites to make sure any colour run is washed out.

I remember when I was little and mom taught me all of the different compartments for detergent, bleach, and fabric softener, then these weird pokey balls to put in the dryer, and you needed to do manual settings depending on what you were washing. When my dad complained I didn't do my laundry, and I told him I could never remember how, he sighed and walked me into the laundry room. "See the detergent? One capful. Put it in. Press the start button. Done." I like that method much better.

Dryer sheets either soften or freshen clothes, can't remember which. They look like the fabric from coffee filters and they smell like flowers.

Well, colour sorting is sort of a requirement, unless you like all your white clothes turning a dull grey. I actually throw my reds in with the darker darks now, though, and most of the lights in with the whites. But that's mostly because I own very few articles of clothing that aren't in the darkish grey/blue range, so everything sort of has to go in either with the grey/blue stuff or with the one load that isn't grey/blue.

I'm too lazy to cart around more than one bottle of anything to the laundry room and back, especially since I only make one trip each way with 3 loads in a single basket (see above exchange with Jeatyn). So no vinegar, no fabric softener. And I quit using dryer sheets because I decided they were one of the causes of my back breakouts. Just fragrance-free detergent for me

(oh, dryer sheets make clothes feel softer and eliminate static cling. They're nice, but the residue they leave can be irritating. And it's hard to find a scent that's not obnoxiously girly.)

I use something similar, my mother gave them to me after I kept colouring my underwear (it came out purple a few times and I actually liked it more). They look like you described these dryer sheets but they catch colors. It's a great invention, I can just put all the stuff in the machine and it comes back same as before!

I refuse to sort my laundry, it's far too much effort. It all goes in the same wash, on the "quick wash" setting. Stuff ends up dingy pretty quickly but I buy most of my clothes from places like primark anyway so it doesn't kill me to spend another £1.50 on a white t-shirt when the old one is grey and bobbly

It's very easy to mess up if you're not focused A few times you forget something colourful in the machine, a few other times you don't see a colored piece among the whites and voila'

All I can say is: don't wash your new jeans with your white shirts. Or you will have this problem.

I think it most often happens as a result of washing a brand new, colorful item that has never been washed before with something white.  The first time you wash something, a lot of dye comes out.  This can stain other clothes.

I don't sort my clothes either.  My strategy is to avoid owning anything white.

that's how it works for me. only white stuff i own is either intended for gym or hanging out around the house, so i don't give a damn about how it looks anyways.
