Well, the #1 seed from both the AFC and NFC have now been eliminated.  It's been a crazy playoff.  The 7-9 Seahawks embarrassed the defending Super Bowl champs New Orleans Saints two weeks ago.  The Jets have sent both Payton Manning and Tom Brady home.  And the oldest rivalry in the NFL play for the NFC championship next Sunday.

Who woulda thunk?

With the Patriots out, the favorite to win it all is gone and with the four remaining teams there's no clear cut favorite.  The Jets beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh a month ago and the AFC game will be played at Pitt.  The Packers beat the Bears in Lambeau three weeks ago but the Bears beat the Pack at home when Da Bears were struggling.

After watching them shut down the Pats and make Dr. Brady look like a quack, I'm thinking Coach Rex has found the formula.  The already beat Pittsburgh at home and they are a great road team.  Jets over the Steelers in a close one.

The NFC is tougher.  (cuz I'm a Bears fan.)  Mike McCarthy has done phenomenal things with the Packers, especially considering all the injuries.  But Aaron Rodgers has to be on his game or the Pack will lose.  I'm betting on the four head coaches of the Bears (one current, three former) to figure out how to get to Rodgers and/or keep him off the field.  Add to that the Bears have the best special teams in the league.  If they protect Cutler like they did last Sunday, Bears win.  Yeah, I'm picking my home team, the Rodney Dangerfield of this year's playoffs.

Anyone else wanna take a shot at Sunday's games?

I think it's going to be Pittsburgh's year. No offense to the Bears but except for the one miracle game against the Saints, Seattle have been crap all year against pretty much anyone outside of their division (althought with all the coverage around here after the Saints game you'd think they were undefeated). So beating them really doesn't prove much. I think it'll be a Steeler/Packers Super Bowl with the Steelers to take it all.

It should also be noted that american football isn't my sport, and while I know team names I hardly pay attention during the actual season to anyone but Seattle (who I hate with a firey passion).

It's a tough choice for this year's Super Bowl... I'm gonna go with the NY JETS... Mainly because they have been the underdog's underdog for several years and I think they want it the most

When you have four really good teams competing, the win often boils down to who wants it most

I have two teams I like,  The Seahawks and anyone playing against Da Bears.

I didn't think the Patriots would get much farther and they didn't. Steelers over Jets and Packers over bears tho I'm not as sure on that one.  I think Steelers in the end.

What do I know, ....

I've pretty much thought all year that the top five teams were ALL AFC teams, and that the NFC was pretty weak sauce for the most part, and one does not have to go much further than Seattle winning a division with a losing record to prove it.  (And I'm a 9er fan, so I know how much that NFC West just sucked, it was all those NFC West 'teams' could do not to stink up every venue they played in to the point of having to air it out for a week after the game just to get the stench of failure out of the place.)

No surprise that on the best weekend of football, the 4 game Divisional playoff weekend, where you can usually count on getting at least 2 of the best games of the year, that the two best games were the AFC games and not the NFC blowouts.

Now, for sure it's going to be way cool to watch Green Bay go to Solider Field and play the Bears for what?  The 182 time or something?  It's old school and tradition and it should be good.  However the two things that Chicago gets in terms of home field advantage are both a wash.  Green Bay is just as accustomed to playing in the cold as Chicago is, and they have played over 40 games in that venue (since the move from Wrigley, yikes I'm old) so they are not going to be upset by the loud, highly partisan, very loyal and extremely drunk Bears fans.  But Jay is not good under pressure, and GB has some good D, and awesome corners so they are going to pick him, Rodgers on the other hand, well, he might be the best QB playing, and pressing him just changes the game even more in his favor.  As long as they can keep the kicks away from Devon Hester it's the Packers game to lose.  So, Packers by 7.

God, I've love to see the Jets win since I think the Jets/Packers match up would make for an electric game.  And I love that trash talk and swagger, particularly when they can back it up.  I'd give this game to the J-E-T-S if they were playing at home.  But in Pittsburgh?  Well the Steelers don't have the wimpy fans that both the Colts and Pats have (did you see all those empty seats at the end of the Jets/Pats game?  Fair weather fans indeed, bunch of M->-bleeped-<-s).  They have sold out over 300 straight games and won more Super Bowl titles (six), won more AFC Championship Games (seven) and played in (fifteen) and hosted more (eleven) conference championship games than any other AFC or NFC team.  It's going to be a madhouse in there, far different from Indy or Boston and that's advantage Steelers.  Moreover, if Rodgers is the best QB, then in all my years I've never seen a defensive back as game changing as Troy Polamalu, Sanchez is not going to have the time he did against the Colts or Pats, and that gives the game to the Steelers.  I'm a huge Jets fan, have been since Namath, and I'll be cheering for them, but if I was betting, I think its the Steelers by 3.

You gotta remember the Jets already played Pitt in their home and beat them.  Jets might be the best road team this year.  I think there's only been one other team to take out Manning and Brady back to back.  Ole Rex has some magic going.  If he does his homework as well as he did for NE, we could see the Jets playing in February.  But if it's up to the QBs, Big Ben will take Pitt to the winners circle.

What I hate about the Bears is there's always the question, "Who is going to show up today?"  And I think that's part of why they get no respect.  They had the toughest last four games in the league and came away 2-2 and one of those wins was against the Jets.

Their defense held up well in Lambeau a few weeks ago but their offense was useless.  And then there's the earlier game when the Bears were struggling yet they beat the Pack at Soldier Field.  Both QBs are talented.  And both struggle if their front line doesn't protect them.  Both have great defenses but the Pack has the superstar element with Matthews and Woodson and both have been playing great.  The game will be decided on either a big play or big turnover.

As far as home field advantage, if they Bears play poorly, the Boo Bears make it a disadvantage being at Soldier Field.

Was listening to NPR just now. Said that the Chicago side of the ticket sales were sold out with in 5 mins of the tickets going on sale. They said that the Green Bay side still had a few tickets left in the $500 range...

$500????

I'd rather go out and buy a $400 TV with munchies for the game then $500 a ticket.

I don't know good tickets to big rock concerts are $250 anymore, and it's going to be hard to find anything more rocking ,than a Championship game for the Bears at Solider Field playing the Pack.  Pound for pound (and it's a well fed city so that's lot of pounds) NO BODY, not even NYC, has sports fans like Chicago - the Blackhawks, the Bulls, the Cubs and the Bears.  And unlike NY, where the football teams play in New Jersey for pete's sake, the Bears play right fricking downtown, right on the lake.  They will be beyond nuts.

Just like 'you can't just walk into Mordor', the Packers are not just going to walk into Solider Field and expect to saunter out with the Hallis Trophy, named after Papa Bear himself.  So it should be a good time.

Yep, right on the lake!

We need to bring back the Super Fans! George Wendt is a southsider, went to school together. But who will replace Chris?

And this guy isn't even fat!

Back when Halas was nearing the end of his coaching career. Old George, the Father of the NFL.

Butkus grabs the Packers front line

It could be the best game of the playoffs or it could leave you crying in your beer.

Well, though I'm glad there are people that get excited about this I wouldn't be the person in my social network to say "hey lets watch football".

I just thought it was sad that the economy is in the tank and more and more people are losing their jobs or can't get one and yet there's still enough money floating around the system to sell out half a football stadium in less then five minutes when ticket prices are more then most anyone's biweekly paycheck.

I understand entertainment is important and all, but a family of 4 going to this game will end up spending the same amount of money on this as I could consider spending on a REAL good FFS job (or rent for a few good months at that).

When times are worst, people turn to something to escape their problems. For many, that's priceless.  For Bears fans, this comes along rarely.  And that has a lot of Bears fans pretty excited.  And it's the Pack and it's for the NFC title.  That's almost as rare as Haley's Comet.  The last trip to the Super Bowl was a fluke, kinda like a 7-9 team winning their division.  This time there's a reason they are here.  Sure beats sitting at home worrying about how broke you are.

And of course it's not just the Bears and Chicago, that Packer thing when you get up around Green Bay qualifies as a cult.  It has all the history, from the 'frozen tundra of Lambau Field' and the only real equal to Papa Bear, Vince Lombardi.  When people started to mock them, calling them 'cheeseheads' what did the Packers fans do?  They started manufacturing plastic cheese wedges to wear on their heads.  I mean don't walk into a bar in Green Bay (and you won't be able to unless you've been there for hours and hours before hand) wearing a Bears jersey on Sunday, they just won't serve you, they will tell you were to go in very colorful language.  Ditto for heading down to the Cubby Bear in Chicago in that cheesehead.

And too the Steelers in Pittsburgh, them people are nuts too.

Oh I've been to Green Bay during a game (shopping though) and it's crazy. I also hear a lot of stories about the 'fun time I missed' tailgating in Lambeau from the people I sometimes call friends. I get told on a regular basis by guys that I'm not truly a man or a Wisconsinite if I don't support the Pack (my feelings this hurts not).

But, I'm glad it gives people something to look forward to.

I did get a good chuckle out of this though.

Sports are very much a regional and cultural deal. Despite the efforts of the NFL to expand it, professional football remains pretty much an East Coast/Midwest deal. SF and LA both have always been huge baseball towns.  Despite the success of the 9ers, and not withstanding that we do love them, the colors of SF are orange and black.  Ditto LA, except its white and Dodger blue.  Hell, LA does not even have a pro football team (USC don't count, though it should) and does not even seem to want one.  But the stadium out there in Chávez Ravine is always packed and I can feel the hate when I show up in my Giants colors.

And it's cultural too, pro football, and even the college teams - all of which have a huge following - have got nothing on high school football in Texas.  Those towns shut down on Friday nights because everyone is at 'the game.'  Likewise, don't even bother going down to the Mission District in SF, or anywhere in East LA if Mexico is playing in the world cup, everyone will be much to busy to serve you.  Unless you're at a bar, in which case "dos cervezas, Viva Mexico!"  I'm sure that the Mexican national soccer team has a much bigger fan following in the US than the US team does.

Go up to Tahoe and I bet most people could tell you who is leading in World Cup skiing.

Yeah, it's a fake artificial bond for the most part, but it is a bond.  When you get all those students at Michigan State in Lansing, or at THE Ohio State University together at those schools you have a huge cross section of people, from different backgrounds, cultures, different interests and majors and all that, but you can unite them on one thing - they all hate the University of Michigan come football season.  My GF went to MSU and won't even wear anything that is Maze and Blue to this day.  Just like I refuse to wear Dodger colors.

It can work to overcome a lot of differences.  It ain't much going to matter if you're black or white, boy or girl, trans or not come Sunday at the local tavern in Chicago, as long as you're down for "Da Bears" then, for a few hours at least, there is something common, and it will all be good.

I live in Cheese Land, but you could not pay me enough to cheer for the Pack, especially since I'm a Vikings fan.

With that being said, if I was forced to place a bet on who wins, I would have to pick the Pack. But I sure and hell ain't rooting for them.

Funny thing about the Packer fans, they love calling themselves "cheese heads" when in fact it was Chicago fans that used the term "Cheese Heads' as a derogatory name for fans of the Packers.

Should the Bears fans call themselves FIBS (F***ing Illinois Bastards) then. Have to be from WI to know that one.

Would love to see the Jets and Bears with Jets winning it all. How can you not like a guy that has a foot fetish. Go Rex.
