Yes, that's right, it is time for me to get my hair chopped! Last time I had to do it myself, and I've had the same cut 3-4 times in a row now... so I'm ready for something slightly different. Hopefully something that doesn't poof out into the perfect Beatles bowl cut when it air dries. (and sorry for the number of images, ahead of time)
Of course, for reference, current picture of me:

and my head in profile, which I am bizarrely really self conscious about. Which is the #1 thing that makes me worried about haircuts (other than passing in general).

Any suggestions you have are good, but I have two thoughts.
1. simple change, just shorter on the sides than I'm used to:

2. Radical change, modified mohawk (shown here on a girl, technically... but I love it)

Mainly I'm worried about how I'd pull off the mohawk... attitude wise I'm fairly confident and artsy, so it's more a matter of would I look ridiculous. And any other suggestions, even if they're totally out there?

I'd say stick with something that had some length or whispy-ness around the edges - would hide the no-sideburns factor. If you went with the buzzed sides it might work if you kept the top longer like in the photo ... hard to say!

hmm I actually really like it as it is in the first pic but I think the mitch hewer one could work! I'm not sure about the  mohawk but you'll never knw unless you try it, I guess. Maybe if you get something like Mitch's youcould put it up in a kind of faux hawk thing anyway?

Thanks for the input, guys. :) I like how it is in the first picture, too... but my hair is really thick, so I actually have to put a lot of wax in it to get it to lay that flat. I'm leaning towards to first one right now. And that was a good point about the sideburns.

Thanks Caleb, it's been 2 1/2 months, and I've been amazed by the changes. Good luck with T... do you know when you're starting?

Getting my bloodwork and tests done March 21, so I will be approved around then, hopefully. I am struggling with getting a job that would let me support myself though, and I can't start T until I'm out of the house.

I think the second one would work the best

like, maybe get your sides shaved to a 4, and keep the top long and layered.
The story is the same, I've just personalized the name.

the second one is my haircut!  well, not exactly, but it's very very close.  and i think you'd pass best with it, but of course i'm biased.   ;D

Oh, hair. The thing I like to remind myself about it is that it always grows back eventually.

Anyways, I think you definitely would benefit from shorter sides no matter which hair style you choose. It helped me a bunch, and we have a sort of similar face shape.

And as for the mohawk, I think you would pull that off well. I've got a mohawk almost like the one in that picture (what with the fact that the sides are not shaved bald), except the back of my hair is also short. I find that if you don't make sure the mohawk is thin enough, though, it will tend to look like a fohawk. Which is where mine is at the moment (I need to get it chopped). But that can actually be a good thing, because it might look very becoming on you, and with that type of style it doesn't always have to be done up like a mohawk (you can keep it flat some days). I think if you want to go for the mohawk, all power to you, and if you are nervous about how thick you want the mohawk part to be just have the stylist go thinner and thinner gradually until it looks how you want.

And remember, it always grows back eventually!

It's reassuring to hear some other guys have tried a similar look and pulled it off. I'm going with the mohawk after all, I figure it's best to do crazy things with my hair now before I need to keep a serious job (and also because no one I've talked to thought a mohawk would look horrible on me). I'll definitely keep in mind the tip about the width. I'm getting it done next Wednesday.... if anyone's interested, I'll post the result. And in case there's someone else with similar features looking for advice, since I never see anyone who looks like me in everyday life and it makes it really hard to make decisions about things like this.

I would like it if you posted the results. :D Always been curious but too afraid to try it on myself.

Okay, I have pictures. At least, webcam pictures since my own computer and thus data is currently inaccessible. I think it turned out pretty well, the hairdresser was really excited I didn't want to look like Justin Bieber, and it's surprisingly easy upkeep. First picture, the spikiness is due to a natural cowlick, not wax. I think I even look more male/less androgynous now. What do you think?

Wow dude it looks awesome. Big difference on your side profile, you pass so much better.
The story is the same, I've just personalized the name.

Suits you and look awesome! Agreed; profile is way better now.

I have an unjustifiable cultural bias against haircuts that are longish/wispy on the back of the neck. So I'll not comment on that part.

As far as the front view though, you're right, I think you do pass better. I think it's the shorter sides - they make your head look narrower and your face less round.

Thanks everyone! Best part is... it doesn't take an hour to dry. :D I figured it would either be the best or worst haircut I've ever gotten, turned out to be the best.
