Northwestern students and administrators are defending an explicit after-class demonstration involving a woman being publicly penetrated by a sex toy on stage in the popular Human Sexuality course last week.

[...]

The 600-person course, taught by psychology Prof. John Michael Bailey, is one of the largest at NU. The after-class events, which range from a question-and-answer session with swingers to a panel of convicted sex offenders, are a popular feature of the class. But they're optional and none of the material is included on exams.

In an e-mail sent to the students of his 600-person Human Sexuality course, psychology Prof. John Michael Bailey offered his "account' of an optional after-class sex toy demonstration that has sparked controversy on campus and in Evanston.

The February 21st Demonstration: Bailey's Account

I teach a large (nearly 600 person) human sexuality class at Northwestern University. During class I lecture about the science of sexuality. Many days after class I organize optional events. These events primarily comprise speakers addressing interesting aspects of sexuality. This year, for example, we have had a panel of gay men speaking about their sex lives, a transsexual performer, two convicted sex offenders, an expert in female sexual health and sexual pleasure, a plastic surgeon, a swinging couple, and the February 21st panel led by Ken MelvoinJBerg, on "networking for kinky people." These events are entirely optional, they are not covered on exams, and I arrange them at considerable investment of my time, for which I receive no compensation from Northwestern University. The students find the events to be quite valuable, typically, because engaging real people in conversation provides useful examples and extensions of concepts students learn about in traditional academic ways.

Ok, this just doesn't mesh, a 21 year old professor born in 1957.  I thought this year was 2011. Maybe I just can't do math.

Where does it say he's 21? I could only see references to 21st February.

QuoteBailey is no stranger to controversy. The 21-year professor, who repeatedly has been named to the Associated Student Government Faculty Honor Roll, including in 2010 and 2009, has drawn criticism for the research and conclusions of his book "The Man Who Would Be Queen," which explores male femininity and  ->-bleeped-<-, a sexual fixation in which a man is sexually excited by the thought or image of himself as a female.

I did not see where it said he was born in 1957.

It's real, real, real (but it's a student publication) ->-bleeped-<-ty writing, but I think they are trying to say he's been a professor for 21 years, not that he's a 21 year old professor.

What exactly does that teach students? I doubt anyone who attended actually had no idea how to use it, they probably would be curious to see if they actually would follow through or not, and for the shock value.
The story is the same, I've just personalized the name.

It teaches students not to waste their time on classes like that.

I dunno, you'd be surprised how many FAAB around here have no idea about what's going on down there. But Jay's right, most spectators likely wanted the shock value.

That makes more sense. I think my mind just added the 'old' while I was reading and well, rereading it just didn't remove it.

Uni students upset about sex? That's a whole different issue. ???
What on earth did they expect, after being told repeatedly what was going to be shown.  Those who complained should be immediately expelled on the grounds of arrant stupidity!

Northwestern investigates sex toy demonstration

By Patrick Svitek

As Northwestern begins an investigation into an optional, after-class sex toy demonstration held last week, an award-winning scholar and clinician announced Thursday evening she will file a formal complaint against psychology Prof. John Michael Bailey for what she calls "a gross violation" of the American Psychological Association Code of Ethics.

The accusations come in the wake of a statement released Thursday morning by University President Morton Schapiro that said he is troubled, disappointed and disturbed about the demonstration in Bailey's popular Human Sexuality course. In an interview Thursday, University spokesman Al Cubbage said the impending investigation has been spawned by the "strong reaction from within and outside the Northwestern community."

Professor J. Michael Bailey takes full responsibility for the live sex act.

He isn't ready, however, to express regret.

"If I decide to say I shouldn't have done this," he said Thursday, sitting in his sex research lab at Northwestern University, "it will be because this could have been avoided, not because anybody has been harmed by it."

Extracurricular Sex Toy Lesson Draws Rebuke at Northwestern
By JACQUES STEINBERG
Published: March 3, 2011

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/04/education/04northwestern.html?_r=1

The president of Northwestern University said Thursday that he was "troubled and disappointed" by a psychology professor's decision to present his students last week with a demonstration outside class that featured a couple engaging in a live sex act using a prop.

The demonstration had been arranged by J. Michael Bailey, whose Human Sexuality class has an enrollment of nearly 600. On Feb. 21, after concluding a lecture at a university auditorium about sexual arousal, Professor Bailey brought onto the stage a man whom he had invited to participate in a discussion of "kinky people," according to an e-mail the professor later sent to his students that was reprinted by The Daily Northwestern.

My definition of "kinky people" now includes getting off on screwing in front of a bunch of students. It's all a bit Monty Python, really :).

I think we in the trans community can use this despicable demonstration to our advantage when challenging J. Michael Bailey's credibility as opposed to his theory of Autogynophilia! It's just as useless a class, as is his theory.

It seems you are confusing Bailey with Blanchard.
Ray Blanchard's theory postulates that there are two unrelated forms of MtF transsexualism, one that is an extreme type of homosexuality and one that is an expression of  ->-bleeped-<-.  Challenging J. Michael Bailey credibility will have no effect on Blanchard's transsexual taxonomy and etiological theory.

Perhaps not. But Bailey has clearly jumped onto the bandwaggon of objectifying and pathologising what should be, fundimental liberty.

In doing so he has treated several people who trusted him and to whom he fraudelently claimed to have specific expertese, into sexual activity and disclosure of personal information.

Researcher to file complaint against NU sex prof

March 4, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Some academics are questioning the ethics of a Northwestern University professor after he allowed students to witness a live sex toy demonstration.

[...]

What happened at Northwestern is so disturbing to Robyn Mathy, an independent researcher based in Oregon, that she plans to file a formal complaint with the American Psychological Association.

"We have a responsibility as instructors and as professionals not to engage in behavior that is going to be shocking, alarming, confusing, disturbing to our students," she told ABC7.

Personally I find this statement - coming from a university professor -  much more shocking, alarming, confusing, and disturbing then a sex demo.
