"Chastity Bono, the daughter of Cher and Sonny Bono, has undergone gender reassignment surgery and now asserts she [that's right, she] is a man. She now wants to be called Chaz.

She has written a tell-all entitled Transition: The Story of How I Became a Man, and has appeared on "The David Letterman Show" and "Oprah." A documentary about her journey called Becoming Chaz premiered on Oprah's OWN network. I know my thoughts on this matter will be politically incorrect, but they are entirely biologically and psychiatrically accurate.

First, Chaz Bono is not a man. She is a woman who has undergone radical surgeries and is taking male hormones in order to look like a man. That isn't a political position, it's a biological reality. Chaz Bono wants to be thought of as male, but she is not male."

Dr. Keith Ablow blows. So it would seem from the article that in his eyes we are all unstable, delusional, pretty much crazy. Its people like him that would take us, dope us up on all kind of feel good meds to render us helpless, put a straight jacket on us and throw us in a padded room as a means of curing us. His close mindedness is very dark ages. People like him should not be in the medical field, he's a very dangerous person because of his position and beliefs. I had more to say about it but it'd all come up like this @!#?@.

If that's "fair and balanced", I don't think so.  Quote Dr. Ablow: "First, Chaz Bono is not a man. She is a woman who has undergone radical surgeries and is taking male hormones in order to look like a man. That isn't a political position, it's a biological reality".
Even though Chaz's body was female before his SRS, that doesn't mean that he is female now.  He may not procreate now, but neither will a good number of the intersex people!  What about them Dr. Abloe!  Jesus even mentions those people as well as us  castrada just as godly as everyone else!  In the same verse!
I got to talk to my niece who is near the end of her course in getting her PhD in psychology when she comes in this summer.  She has given me the most sweet, positive response to my coming out.  She may know what I am going more than I do!.  Her expertise is Criminal Psychology, the same stuff as my mother's old boyfriend did.  She obviously knows the difference between criminal sexual deviation and transgender issues!   And even she does analysis only, she trumps an MD like Dr. Ablow!

Lol. Just... lol.

Fox News Medical A-Team. Maybe he's who they came up with when they had the construction montage. They'd have been better with the armored stealth-balloon. At least that has no pretense about being full of hot air.

Ablow is not a Psychologist, he's a Psychiatrist. On top of this he has no friggen clue.

Aw Geez, This just came to me:  The Medical A-Team.  Didn't the A-Team on the tube a long while ago had a mental character named Murdoch?  Any relation to crazy Rupert Murdoch, the owner of FOX?

Fox News, and it's ilk, sells idiotic levels of weapons-grade stupid to morons, and business is booming.  Has been for about 20 years now on full boil, and a good 15 of moron rising from the mid 70 through the 80s to have given it a full head of steam.  You should not make fun of them because I'm pretty much convinced that they believe all that: hook, line and sinker.  And simply making fun of them (though its hard not to, particularly when they get to the 'science' stuff, it really is a laugh a minute) will not change their beliefs.  Happily they do have a very old demographic and they are slowly going away.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

That's a good way to describe it:  weapons-grade stupid.  It's hard to believe how anyone can take Faux News seriously.

What bothers me is when people read so much into what any kind of transgender goes through and STILL 'call them out' like that.  'Radical surgeries', that speaks for itself for anyone on how costly and painful it is.  He needs to just leave the poor man alone and let him sell his books. :\

I think people like Dr. Ablow are why my gastro, back before I had stomach surgery and quit my job to return to school, urged me away from psychiatry and into psychology as a profession.  He told me that the hospital at which he was one of the big muckymucks had just discharged their chief psychiatrist and hired on two psychologists--because, in his words, the psychiatrist only reported what medications the patient needed, and psychologists provided holistic (read, human) evaluations of the patient that could aid doctors in providing truly personalized care that best suited the patients' needs.

On a personal level, I only ever met one psychiatrist who really gave a flip about people, and he also urged me away from psychiatry.  I'm sure it wasn't out of fear of competition either, given the guy was 85 years old.

Yes. And a character named Mr. T. Which, ironically is what my better half calls me.

Though it is their mantra, FOX News is anything but "fair and balanced."

If this man is indeed a properly trained Dr, then it is a sad if not particularly surprising reflection on the state of moden medicine that someone can use their training and status, to attach a single individual, in this manner, for whatever reason.

If the individual is indeed psychotic, then it is cruel in the extreme to humiliate then in this way.

But unless the individual has been properly examined or their medical notes have been made available to Dr Ablow, then it is simply not possible to make such a claim.

But Dr Ablow aside, that no Drs have come to the indiviiduals assistance in this matter, or seen fit to refer it to the appropriate supervising authoritiesd, does case a serious question over the integrity of American medicine.

I just wanted to pop in and clarify something to the unindoctrinated (because I remember having to look it up:

Psychiatry is the medical treatment of the psyche, psychology is the science of the psyche.

Psychiatrists issue prescriptions, psychologists actually seek to help people figure stuff out.

Psychiatry is the medical treatment of the psyche, psychology is the science of the psyche.

To be perfectly honest, they've all moved away from the psyche and full speed into the medical model.  Psychiatrists prescribe pills to fix people on a neurochemical level.  Psychology is the use of empirically validated treatment methods that insurance companies approve to treat the diagnosable conditions listed in the DSM.  No validation?  No payment.  And they have guidelines: if someone has x, you're approved to do y and z to treat them, nothing else.

Psyche* was the Greek word for both "soul" and "butterfly" (literally, butterflies were "little souls," as they mirrored our own Hero's or Hera's Journeys).  There's no such thing as soul in psychology or psychiatry anymore.  That's a dirty word, and that's why therapists who practice methods that acknowledge and holistically engage with a client's soul are cash only, because no insurance company will reimburse for that treatment.

As an aside, at University of Colorado Denver (where I got my degree), the psychology department is the only department in the entire school who refuses to crosslist a course with the religious studies department.  Think about that for a second.  That means math, engineering, physics, chemistry, business, biology, sociology, political studies, public administration, anything you can think of, crosslists with religious studies, while psychology has turned the department down repeatedly.  It's a revealing light on what psychology really thinks about the concept of a whole person that they've abandoned the person-centered aspect of their field in order to prove that they're a serious science and not some pseudo-wishy-washy-claptrap.  It's also why you'll learn next to nothing about William James or Carl Jung in a psychology classroom, as they were traitors to the field who dared posit that we're more than collection of neurochemical processes interacting with an external environment.

(Yes, psych was my major.  Yes, it kind of depressed me sometimes...)

* Psyche was also the child bride of the god of the underworld in Greek myth, but I didn't have to go there.
