Title: Location, location, location
Post by: Jessica M on March 29, 2010, 06:12:58 PM
Hi everybody,

I was wondering where all you beautiful people are from, where you live now and what you like/dislike about these places. If you don't want to say where you are then please just say how you feel about the place. You can say what country/state/province/county/city etc. Be as vague or as specific as you like. Just because I'm curious really.

Woops forgot to add my part :P
I'm am from and live in Ireland, I do plan on leaving at least for a while after college. I like almost everythin except the weather and being a small country anything other than the "norm" stands out and isnt really understood, leading to a bit of prejudice.

I'm in the SF Bay Area, at the northern edge of Silicon Valley.

I guess what I like the most is that the public transportation is pretty good, and the climate is temperate (summers aren't too hot, winters aren't too cold).

What I dislike is that this particular part of the peninsula can be a bit of a cultural vacuum. Fortunately, that's where the public transportation comes in handy.

I'm with Shades, sort of, split my time between Sonoma County and San Francisco.  The weather is very nice, it's one of the most liberal areas in the US, and I love the beach.

I was born in Akureyri, Iceland.
Then I moved to Reykjavík.
Then I moved to Keflavík.
Then I moved to Garðabær.
Then I moved to Reykjavík.
Then I moved to Hvammstangi.
Then I moved to Linköping Sweden.
Then I moved to Partille.
Then I moved back home to Akureyri Iceland and I'm still there.

I am from the American mountain west - wide open spaces and low population.  The low population means that people are friendly and usually willing to accept each other's idiosyncrasies.  There are some who have a narrow view of the world, but mostly it is live and let live. :)

Resources are sometimes scarce, though.  The nearest gender specialist is 100 miles.  The nearest support group is 70 miles.  The nearest store that sells shoes my size is 50 miles.  But most of my friends are within walking distance.

The hard part about the rural West, which is awesome, is the lack of jobs.

good tg medicine and coverage for it with public healthcare plans, "who cares" attitude towards gender variant people, uhh close to WI? (cheese)

sucks: taxes, weather, winter, taxes, the job market, wcco, bland food, road construction, overpriced university, taxes.

East coast of Florida, roughly 45 mins east-southeast of Orlando and 15 mins from the closest beach.

In general a nice area with a low cost of living (hi $600 a month apartment) and nice people.  Only complaint I really have is that it's a bit boring.  Heck, one of the common nicknames for my city actually mixes the word "boring" with the real name.

Here the liberals are conservative, well more so-cred but that's a different story.  On the bright side the province funds SRS in the end and I've found a therapist, GP and an endo within a kilometer or so of my apt. ;D

The Great Pacific Northwest of the United States, in particular Portland, Oregon.  Great resources and beautiful country.  Close to the mountains, not far from the coast and right next to the Great Columbia River.

The only thing that is a bummer is the rain.  But I would rather have the rain than snow.

I grew up in Northern VT (yup, we got cows round these parts) right out side of Burlington, then Moved to Newport RI, then back to Burlington, Then lived in Chicago for almost 3 years, and now im back living in Burlington.  I'm kind of a boomerang.

Burlington is probably the most liberal city in New England, and although tiny, and awesome place to live.  Its primarily a college town, except when it becomes a bit touristy. Winter sucks. Jobs are about average.  People are friendly and accepting, and for the most part, will just let you be.  Its kinda the east coast version of Portland OR (not to be confused with Portland Maine, which is the actual east coast portland...), crusty organic types included.

I have a cousin that lives in Burlington, visited before, nice area I enjoyed it very much. I especially love the drive up there, very peaceful. Also took the trip to Montreal and spent a day.

I live in North Jersey, just a short drive to the G.W. Bridge. Not the type of area I'd like to stay for the rest of my life haha. I live in a very small 1 sq. mile town and finding work around here especially for someone like me who isn't in college right now is pretty tough. I'd like to leave as soon as I can.

Small town in Maine. It's not bad on the whole, the main problem is not being able to go anywhere without half the people you see being people who know you.  :-\ Ah well.

Palm Springs, CA.

Wonderful desert living, a little toasty in summertime --like, 120°-- but so what. Strong LGBT presence: mayor and several city council members are gay. No real culture, but so what. Golf, (I don't) tennis, (I don't) swimming pools, (eeek, my hair!) casinos, (I don't) endless restaurants and exceedingly low crime.

I can't imagine living anywhere else.  (https://www.susans.org/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fforums.snapstream.com%2Fvb%2Fimages%2Fsmilies%2Fsmile.gif&hash=a83073009d91325381eb0f6e0ccfdcd76a6fd71a)

I live in a rather rural area between Richmond,VA and Washington, DC. It isn't too bad except the nearest store (which is a truck stop BTW) is about 8-9miles away. Combine that with the 45-55mph speed limit on all the roads around here and my bike sits disused in storage.

Locally there isn't anything, and once you get on the DC Beltway, you find you'd rather be stuck in the rural areas rather than stuck in the traffic there. VA-234 is the last decent highway left up around there.

I wouldn't mind living in Fredericksburg, VA again (which is also between Richmond,VA and Washington, DC, but is right on the interstate and an independent city), which is primarily relics from the civil war and stuff for college kinds but I enjoy the place.

Ironically enough, I was looking into moving to Burlington, VT myself. In theory VT has laws protecting people, while the attorney general of VA just sent out letters to our community colleges saying it is again ok to fire gay people now. I guess the Republicans are trying to send a signal, they've been out of power for some time in this state and I suppose they are making up for it.

Currently in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, after living in other parts of the state.

Good points are it's not too small, and not too big, there is a bit of culture, good restaurants, lots of wineries, the weather is reasonable most of the year although it does get into the 40's in Summer, if you like sports it's the sort of place you'll like, and it's surrounded by good motorcycle roads.

Bad points are- that it gets over 40 in summer especially when there is a hot North wind blowing, it is a couple of hours from the coast, there are far too many 'Bogans'(like US trailer trash without the Southern style!), shops are sometimes not that good, the employment situation is a bit slow. Sometimes the place lacks a bit of 'get up and go' attitude.

I wasn't expecting such a quick response :P I kind of predicted the U.S would take up the most part followed by Australia (BTW stop complaining about the weather in Australia, today in Dublin; rain, snow, rain, sleet, snow, and rain, still raining too  :( ) I actually applied to go to Queensland Uni but couldnt afford the tuition, another thing to love about this little island free 3rd level education :).
Ok everyone has said where they are or from, so where are you going? Where do you want to go in the future, or where have you always dreamed of living? For me, either California (internship at UCSB) or Berlin for the summer would be ideal. After that who knows.

Having traveled the world on both business as well as pleasure, and having been most places in the US, I currently have no intention of going anywhere.  Really, the rest of the US is just too weird right now.  I gave up touring to have a home theater so I don't need the money, and I'm content to stay in Cali, where just about anything I want or need can be found.

After everyone has been so nice to me during my transition, it would be hard for me to leave.

"If I had not come to these high plains,
my heart would have missed
the beat of this love of place,
my guts would have yearned for
some unknown fulfillment,
my mind would have shrunk
to a small, civilized size,
and my soul would have tentacles,
searching, always reaching out
for what I found here.

"But I am now like the tenacious sage
wide roots forced into
this seldom yielding ground
to make a place for me
to hold on tight
to nurture and be nourished
and, oh this land does feed me."

I grew up on the north shore of Massachusetts.  Very gay and artsy area.  Great place, if you have money.  I have lived here in west coast, central Florida for 30 years now.  Very conservative, with pockets of enlightenment.  While the county has a rule refusing any money for anything gay, the city of Tampa has protections for gays, not trans.  St. Petersburg and some of the smaller towns actually protect transgendered people.  It is ok in winter-it freezes, but rarely snows (1978).   Very hot and humid in the summer.  We have people eaten by sharks (less than 25 miles from my house) as well as alligators.  We miss most of the really bad tornadoes, except when they are connected with a Cat 5 hurricane, then we have plenty.
By the way, my wife and I travel to New England for a week in the fall.  I always walk just a little taller, with a spring in my step knowing that they actually consider us human beings there, with actual rights.  I would love to retire to coastal Maine, or maybe the Berkshires.

Born and raised in one of the poshest areas of London (I saw our old home up for sale in country life - which is a property magazine dealing with stately homes and the like - it was up for about 25 million dollars and I was like WTF I really wish my parents had kept that!) We sold it for a tiny fraction of that.

Split my childhood living as an honorary schoolgirl between two amazing boarding schools on the south coast (one near Worthing the other near Brighton) and our London home. (for the 1960's my schools were unbelievably tolerant of my gender non compliance - but I guess that's what you get from having rich and ultra progressive parents :D)

Moved out to various places in the Reading/Oxford/London area when I became a proper young woman and had my SRS.

Finally moved down to cornwall with my partner when my mother died.

I would LOVE to live in America Canada or Australia, even if only for a year or two, but unless one of my books get's published and made into a film I probably won't manage it.

PS Janet - I've already told you - (and indeed any of my friends on here) any time you want to visit cornwall - the spare room is all yours. But if you come in the summer bring your swimming cozie cos our pool is glorious!

I'm currently in Toronto, Ontario. I like it because it's a huge collection of different types of people - it's easy enough to find a corner of the community to call home.

Hopefully I'll live by the ocean next, which is something I've never done before. I'm thinking somewhere along the Canadian west coast.

Im from Hull in the north east area of the UK. good parts.. hmm i suppose everything in the city is quite closely packed togeether so its easy to get to shops and entertainment. The bad part.. not enough variety of things to do, at least in my opinion. Id like to move to the US or Australia someday but those hopes are a long way off yet.

South Florida. Near West Palm Beach to be more exact. Precise location is a well guarded secret. But is but a short drive from the beach and mall.

Where am I from?  *takes a deep breath*  Well...

Born in Dayton, OH.
Moved to Beaver Creek, OH
Moved to Merced, CA
Moved to Suisun City, CA
Moved to Walnut Creek, CA
Moved to Chevrier in the Hâute-Savoie just across the border from Geneva Switzerland
Moved to Boularis on the Côte D'Azur
Moved back to Suisun City, CA
Moved to San Francisco, CA
Moved to Herforst, in the Eifel region of Germany
Moved to Yelm, WA
Moved to Seattle, WA
Moved briefly to Sacramento, CA before moving to
Fischbach, in the Reinland-Pfalz area of Germany
Moved to a small town near Küsel.  (On the border between Reinland-Pfalz and Saarland.
Moved to London, England
Moved back to Küsel
Moved to Benicia, CA (after a couple months stay in Vacaville)
Moved to Aurora, IL
Moved to Chicago, IL
Moved to a small town in WI, just outside of the Twin Cities, MN ...

*lets out remaining breath*  Where I currently reside.

I love the people here in the TC area.  They are very friendly and accepting of diversity.  I actually like the long snowy winters.  I'd much rather shovel snow than mow grass.  And it's great having affordable skiing so nearby.  I also like the low crime rate, and here in the St. Croix river valley the scenery is very pretty.

The only things I don't like are that the Twin Cities aren't real cities as I would define them.  That is to say, they don't have much of a "city" feel.  More like a large suburban sprawl.  And the food does tend to be very bland.  I still haven't managed to find any really good Mexican food.  (And speaking of "West-Mex", anybody ever tried Taco John's?  It's the weirdest "Mexican" food I've ever eaten.  Think Taco Bell, but blander - yes, that is apparently possible - with tater tots added to the burritos. o.O )

I was born in Still Water, Oklahoma and till I was about three months I stayed there but after an while my mother moved us to Dallas, Texas which I stayed there till I was about six and then we placed ourselves into Arizona which we stayed there for an year and finally since then for about an decade now I've been living in Ontario, California which constantly gets confused with Ontario, Canada.

The good segments of where I live is the weather is normally right in the middle or warm, I live near L.A. and Hollywood...Right by the airport, small town, small population and good victuals.

The bad is we're prone to the resonating aches of earthquakes, too much city and not enough farms, lots of fog from L.A., a-hat people, run by very gangster-ish hoodlums, very ignorant; Uneducated people and an lot of traffic.

I ended up in Los Angeles because it does not leave ice on the windshield of my car, ever. On the other hand, there is traffic. But there is the most incredible variety of trees! and traffic. There is a great LGBTQ community and Center. and traffic. Lots of varieties of food / restaurants available - and great vegetarian options. and traffic. Oh and earthquakes. At least in traffic I can listen to music and practice patience and being in the moment.

Before LA, I lived in Lincoln Nebraska, Cambridge Massachusetts, Toronto Ontario Canada, Arlington Virginia, Las Cruces New Mexico, Denver Colorado, Holcomb Kansas, Hackensack New Jersey, and born in Seattle Washington.

My father was not military, he just had a vagabond in his soul, and kept chasing his dream of being a pastor.

For this part of my life, this is where I need to be. Weird androgynous people are more common here than anywhere else I've been.

Pros ::  It's only a short walk to Halifax which has many very interesting people, and a wicked skate park.  We have an incredible music scene, tons of awesome bands come here, and alot of good bands/djs come from here :)

Cons :: I'm not a big fan of the city  :(

Wher do I want to be? That's a difficult one, I like ice skating so don't mind the cold, and would like to be near the sea, and need good motorcycle mountain roads.  So far it looks like Tasmania, New Zealand, Scotland or Canada.  Sounds like another OS holiday or two is needed.

I'm from Finland, a small country in Northern Europe. Born here, been living here for my whole life. I'd love to able to get on the road and see the world some day. The tens of holiday trips I've made with my parents over the years may have something to do with that. :) Well, I still (hopefully...) have decades to make all that reality. :) There don't seem to be too many people from around here posting at Susan's, btw...

I was born in and grew up in Australia.  I grew up in a conservative small town in country New South Wales.  After leaving home I have lived in Adelaide, Wagga, Newcastle and Brisbane.
Currently I live in Hong Kong. I have been here for about 2 1/2 years and love it.
There is not much TG support here or protection against discrimination.  Luckily I have found a great therapist to help me along my path, along with my fabulously supportive SO.

I live in Brampton, On Canada. It's a fairly large city on the north-west corner of Toronto. It's not a bad place to live. Everything you could possibly need ever is here. I really prefer smaller towns though and I have no family close by. Don't really know anyone here either, except for those I work with.

I've been living in the Florida Panhandle for a few years, I absolutely hate it! Its too hot, transportation sucks, and from what I hear its a very closed community (bible belt area). It wasn't my choice to live here, but living in Florida has been a good learning experience. I'm originally from Ontario, Canada, and can't wait to move back in about a year and a half.

I'm in Indiana. I was born in Colorado, but due to some cruel irony, my family moved here when I was a year old.

Pros- ...what pros? Oh, well I guess my college is decently snazzy, at least by Indiana standards. We have some pretty amazing professors, which is enough of a boost to keep me sane until I graduate and get my behind OUT of here.

Cons- It's closed-minded (more "ignorance to the point of insult" than "outright, unabated bigotry"-- it's hard to attack someone if you're too oblivious to realize they exist), it's boring, and the weather is on crack. I was not made for Indiana.

...I plan to move out west once I finish college. I'm looking at Oregon, Washington, and Colorado, mostly. Maybe the east coast, if out west falls through-- but I'd like to go out west if I can. Wherever I can find a good teaching job and a university with a good master's program. Good open-minded places with decent climates.

I'm from Edmonton. I like it how it's pretty open-minded here compared to the rest of Alberta. It's actually amazing what a huge difference there is between the city and small towns that are only a fifteen minute drive away. I like the abundance of parks in the river valley and how there are a lot of festivals going on. During the summer, every day there is one type of festival or another going on in the city. What I don't like is the winter though. It's long and cold, and when the temperature rises above freezing, there is slush EVERYWHERE and it mixes with the road sand and it's so icky, and then a cold snap comes and all the slush freezes and the city turns into one huge muddy icy crust. My ideal place to live would be Vancouver. It's very open-minded, gorgeous scenery, and no winter!

i live, and have always lived, in Massachusetts. Have moved tons of times since I was born. Always lived in Middlesex County or Worcester County. I live in a town I hate now but want to move back to my hometown of Framingham, or ideally to Berlin, a place that is more the country side and nice (my dad lived there once I i -loved- it). This summer or fall i should be finally moving out and living on my own and attending college, and i'm going to try and live in Berlin.

p.s. i really think i want to live in the south/ south-western U.S. when i'm older. i'm sick of it here.

I have an odd connection to San Luis Obispo... It has an uncanny way of making it's way into my life from just about every aspect.

Can you tell me more about it... Like specifically about the TG community. Is it large? Does it have a good support network? How many support groups are there? Is the city as a whole open minded towards TGs? Is it a good place to transition?

I thought I would chime in for fun so here it goes, ;D

I live in Oklahoma in a good sized town (By OK's standards. lol) What i like about my particular town is that it has *almost* everything a city has but with out the lines. People here are extremely right wing or left wing. Very few mix and match ideas but rather born into a line of politics and beliefs. Also my town is has been run by the same people for 40yrs with the exception of our new mayor. I graduated with him and he was elected at age 19. lol Class of '07 FTW!  :D

Likes: Has most convenience, few neighbors in my part, the land itself, the fact its all I know.
Dislikes: The only time being gay/bi/Trans is accepted is if your that "someone else just not my friend/child/etc, Lack of overall culture or accepting of others (primarily to G/B/T and Body Mod), No social outlet for anyone who doesn't drink/smoke/party. (Im straightedge! Over Sober!) and last but not least NO NHL GAMES! lol Hockey basically does not exist in OK except for a minor league team that sadly sucks!
