Hi,

So I am growing my hair out for obvious reasons but I don't think letting it grow like it is without getting it trimmed or whatever is a good idea, but at the same time I don't want to get an overly feminine haircut yet because I am still living the big majority of my life as a male for now. So I want to keep growing out my hair but I'm not sure what to do exactly because I know I can't just do nothing for months, it's getting really really shaggy. Thanks!!!

I'm pondering the same question (more or less), and thinking of just asking for the stylist's advice... seems to me that they should be able to make suggestions from a position of authority.

Don't over analyze it so much, just get your hair cut how you want. It's not as obvious a thing as you think. I worried about it the same, but then I just went ahead and got a nice layered trim and cute bangs. It won't attract as much attention as you think, it might get some questions from closer friends/family, but generally the only difference is presentation. You can just pull your hair in a pony tail and it won't look much different than any other hair cut, and guys cuts have bangs as well.

I've just been letting mine go... my mom will occasionally insist on trying to trim it up, but she usually trims off more than I was expecting.  Everybody keeps telling me that it looks nice (as recently as a couple of hours ago) so I'm assuming that means it doesn't need much extra maintenance at the moment .

Alright I was just curious because it's a little out of control and getting harder to make it look alright when I leave my apartment haha.

I do my best to make mine presentable while it's wet, and then give it time to dry without messing it up much.

This is my current problem as well. I need to find a hairstylist asap! My hair has no style to it at all and it's very kinky, gotta love being mixed!  I've been growing it out for about two and a half years now.

I really need to find someone that knows how to deal with my hair. I'm going for long layers

Get it done as girly as possible. It really isn't that unusual for men to have girly cuts, at least not here. But then lots of boys use eye liner with that too and we call them emo :-P :-) x

I had the same dilemma because I didn't know what to do. My hair was long and shaggy, and in dire need of attention so I finally had to just go for it. I was really nervous and just sort of blurted out "layers" and "like 3 inches shorter." I'm not full-time yet so if I'm going to my classes or work, I just shower and leave it. When I get home, a couple minutes with a straightener and I look totally fab!

I mean I would love to get a very feminine haircut, but I'm still living as a male with people who do not know about my transition nor will they, so not sure what to do with it exactly, but I know I can't get a super feminine haircut yet, in a few more months possibly I could but I know I can't wait that long to get a haircut, it already looks ridiculous.

I think if you make a ponytail and show your forehead and cheeks, for most MTFs it should not be too feminine before a long time under HRT.

I got my last boy haircut in October and it was pretty darn short.  So, on the day I went full time I got the hair extensions in my avatar.  An expensive solution, not to mention time consuming, but a solution to the problem nonetheless.

That actually sounds like a really good idea, so I could get it cut sort of normally for a guy and then once I am ready to go full time, I can buy extensions and no big deal then right? I can use those until my hair grows and I avoid any awkwardness right?

Only big deal is the cost.  But yeah, now I'm in grow out mode until I don't need the extensions any more.  I will have to go back in from time to time for touch ups but those won't be as big a hit to the purse as it was the first time.

I belabor the cost only cause I didn't know how expensive it was going to be when I first had the idea.  That said, worth very penny, and I'd do it again because it has worked out so well.

Get rid of split ends and even out the length a little bit more (Was starting to get a mullet going lol). My hair is still pretty short, but I've gone in and asked for a scissors cut taking very little off and asking for it to be clean up with the intention that I plan to grow the hair out. I just had it trimmed a week ago and it really helped it look better rather then looking like an uncontrolled mess.

Oh and I wanted to add, even if you do get a trim try to go somewhere with knowledgeable/experienced hair dressers (Not the $6 discount haircut place) as to not have someone give you a near buzz cut when you ask for as little possible off (Im taking from experience here).

Well the hair in my avatar is a wig but I have pretty shaggy hair; I think I posted a "boy" mode picture in the no makeup post, but that is sort of what I was going to do. I will keep it managed as best as possible and then eventually get extensions once I am ready to go full time, but in the mean time, I will just keep it trimmed a little bit, but not actually cut it, if that makes sense.

I don't present female at all yet (Pre everything so cant even if I want to. ) but iv been growing out my hair since my second year of highschool. ( At the moment it goes a little further than halfway down my back and considering it's curly much longer straightened most likely.) In my experiences though i can say it's important to get it trimmed every 4 months or so, or else the ends split and it gets harder to manage and grows slower.
