Joe.

I want to treat myself to a shirt, tie and trousers next time I have a bit of spare cash. The only problem is I have no idea what size shirt to get. I'm not sure what it's like in America, but in England when I go to the shirt section it's all like 15", 17" and stuff. I think that's the neck size, but what the hell? How do I know if it will fit the rest of my body, how does it know? I want a shirt, but don't know how to measure myself :S I understand trousers, thankfully, I just really don't understand the shirt sizing or what size to get. I feel so stupid asking this but what do I do?! Haha

neck size, then arm length. You can google charts.

Basically, you won't know until you try it on. We use the neck measurement and the sleeve length to determine shirt size. Generally a slim fit shirt would have a more dramatic difference between the shoulder and hips than a regular fit shirt. If you go to a nice store (like Macys) that has somebody who knows what they're talking about, they might suggest a brand that would fit best for your shape. Maybe you can take the measurements of your chest, waist and hips and say you want something that's very square shaped.

Can you get fitted at a store? I know stores in the US that do that.

Your best bet would be to go to a store and try on a whole bunch of shirts. Sizes can vary between brands.
