Ha...LA, I think you nailed it! All the young women want to sound like Kim Kardashian which makes it a bit disconcerting at times for this old conversation eavesdropper, I always feel inclined to check and see if they also have an enormous butt!  :D ;D

I have no idea how this sounds like - I am not into pop singers, so I may have missed that but it sounds more like a trend than anything. Plus I dont need to talk like a twen anymore, so I guess I do not have to take up these bad habits :P

Righto Anja, it is like tween talk and it comes from the very top of their necks and is grating on other people's auditory nerve endings to say the least. I've heard cis women in their 30's talking like that and know they didn't formerly sound like that naturally, it's absolutely stupid!

Hmm - I think I may have done that pre-transition when I was still speaking bass. I wonder if that may be connected to my voice problems now even, that would be not good if that was already a problem before. But it really sounds awful - I saw this one because I did not know what you mean. I guess I dont get it who uses a voice like that now - I am not sure if it is common here already, but as US habits usually spread fast, I am sure that will not be an exception.

OMG yes, that's what I'm referring to and it is beyond irritating and I totally agree with her closing comment!

Ms Grace

I studied linguistics for a semester at university, it has something to do with social primacy. It's why some people lose their accents very quickly when moving to some countries but not others, if the person feels assured of the superiority of their accent (even subconsciously) they tend to keep it. But if they feel their accent is inferior and looked down upon they quickly acquire the new accent. I guess there's no accounting for taste! :)

Some of us can't help vocal fry.

I've done everything I can to help push along my voice, such as quitting smoking, not drinking coffee(and rarely ever soda). But I still have a fairly vocal fry-like voice, especially in the morning.

I don't know why everybody thinks its an "epidemic" that came from rich snobs on TV, it's just a biological vocal feature that some of us have more than others. The last person I want to sound like is Kim Kardashian.

Hope you don't feel put upon because that's not the intention. You may come by that naturally and that's ok, we are discussing a thing that some cis women are doing to their voice intentionally which is is depicted in the video and is not particularly attractive. or a good idea for the long term health of their vocal cords.

Oh, here's this weird thing I've never understood. I'm being warned that this is an old thread. Doesn't that imply that people's comments have an expiration date and no lasting value?  Anyway, I hope it is okay for me to reply.

The Zen of screaming lady, Melissa Cross and various other people teach how to include vocal fry in song in a way that doesn't hurt your throat. I think saying vocal fry hurts your voice is like saying that you shouldn't walk because it can damage your legs. Yes, if you walk inappropriately.

I have deduced that I am not wanted here.

That is just a common warning for forums to have, no worries at all ;)

And I think what you said is true. They say too much of anything can kill you... but where do you draw that line... Doesn't everything kind of kill you? I suppose you could relate this to the term "normal wear and tear" as it applies to the body. A.k.a. doing too much of any one thing can be bad, but in reality everything (even breathing air) is toxic or harmful in some way. Sorry I don't mean to go all philosophical on ya, it is an interesting point that has crossed my mind for random reasons before

Please excuse my exuberance.

At 8:30 it shows the false cords involved in vocal fry and distortion:

The vocal cords are held open while an area closer to one's mouth vibrates to produce the distorted sound.
I have deduced that I am not wanted here.
