So, what say you?  Do you think we as a group are a bit too sensitive at times when it comes to dealing with the rest of the world?

Me, I'm thinking that at times we are. I don't mean about real hate or slurs and such, but about common sayings, offhand comments that may be uttered without real brain activity backing them up, things like that. Things that people may be used to saying and they may not take a quick survey of their current audience before uttering them.

Do you think we really are as sensitive as comes across on the internet, or do you think we may just be using this as a soundboard to express our dislike of the seemingly small offhand comments that irk us when they pile up one on top of another day after day?
Discord, I'm howlin' at the moon
And sleepin' in the middle of a summer afternoon
Discord, whatever did we do
To make you take our world away?

Discord, are we your prey alone,
Or are we just a stepping stone for taking back the throne?
Discord, we won't take it anymore
So take your tyranny away!

Expressing my dislike of something doesn't mean I can't handle it in the real world, I just think it's important to notice that it's happening and that with talking about it, we can maybe make the world a better place one tiny bit at a time.  I know, quite a laughable goal, but nothing wrong with trying.

I think everyone is. Most people take things way to seriously or they dig in to try to find some hidden meaning that isn't even there in the first place.

Kia Ora,

Re: Are we sometimes too sensitive for our own good?

Yes...When one takes things personally ie, too seriously, they tend to suffer...And this suffering is self inflicted...

I think as a whole transgender people can be excessively sensitive, and I've also been guilty of it. I think it's like Caysee said - things just all pile up and after a while you're like "omg can we please stop." I don't think it helps that we have so many differences within the "community" (that word is unfortunately used very loosely) that lead to in-fights...people just get angry because they feel the other person is a bad representation

I have no idea if we are. I just know that I am. I am super-thin skinned.

This thread has upset me.  Why does everyone have to always criticize how sensitive I am about stuff?  Stop making threads that bother me.

I agree with Jen. Who is this "we?" We are all individuals with varying degrees of sensitivity.
Personally, that phrase has mostly been directed at me by people who were trying to shame me into not standing up to them and letting them treat me like crap. Does that make me "too sensitive?" Don't know, don't care. I do know what happens if I don't maintain my boundaries and stand up for myself though and it is way worse than being "too sensitive."
That said, I've met a few people where they took things and got messages out of them that don't make a lick of sense to me. Maybe that's being too sensitive. I've always thought of that as more projecting though.
In a nutshell, I don't really care either way.

See the problem is that many people really do think like this. They take thinks completely to heart instead of using common sense to realize that when most people make blanket statements they're never directed at one person in particular.

Also, this needless sarcasm as a counter to a thread you don't approve doesn't say "I can handle things properly in the real world and I'm just using this forum as a place to vent" it says "I'm passive aggressively trying to derail a conversation I don't approve of instead of simply exiting."

You would be right if my post was a counter to a thread I don't approve of.  Take a chill pill lol.

Looks like I am the only no vote, lol I like to err on the side of caution, so it is hard to be too sensitive in a support group.

Some people take things to heart, others have thick skin.

That's all that really needs to be said.
