Two days ago I heard about a organization in Atlanta that helps homeless LGBT youth.  I know I am like someone who lived in a bubble but I never thought about them.  I want to do something for them, maybe a day playing on the lake, BBQ, things like that.  I think it would be a fun day for everyone.  My neighbors have offered the use of their boats as well.  We could easily handle 50+ people.  I want to do this but is it a good idea, or a whole lot of head and heart ache waiting to happen?  I plan to reach out to them this week once I have a better idea on the time line, but right now I was thinking towards the end of August.

Whats everyone think about this?

Atlanta has always had a lot of humanitarian social activities going on. Whether a good idea or not, I can't say. However, if you pursue, it might be a good idea to enlist the help of others who would commit early on to help in certain ways, like your neighbors, and beyond.

I think this is an awesome idea!

I know if you tried to do that in Australia you'd need so much insurance it would sink the boat. All you can do is ask them, sounds great in principle but they'll let you know if it is workable.

All boats are insured, that is a requirement of the marina.  I also hold a Merchant Marine Master license which makes me a professional boater.  With this being a no cost trip, meaning we are not charging any one anything we bypass alot of the laws.
I have run charter boats in the past and have dealt with the headaches that come from it.

Being that you have the liability covered, and these are homeless people your working with (and I'm assuming younger), I think it sounds like a very nice thing to do  :) - as long as there is nothing that if someone came back and stole would present a problematic loss  :police:. That might sound like it is in jest, but it rings with at least a little bit of truth. I would even be interested in helping, were Atlanta now not so far away.  :(

Theft is a concern on the boats, seeing as I use mine as my primary..well only place I live (I know its against the law in Ga promise not to tell anyone)  Keeping things secured and out of sight are a must have.  I also plan to ask that the people running the organization come to chaperone, and help manage the youths.  They work with them on a day to day period while I avoid interaction with anyone under 25 when I can help it.
It also helps prevent any one saying that someone did or said something while more knowledgeable people are present.  I really want to help but first I have to make sure myself and my neighbors are protected.
