Guy Hobbies...For Girly Reasons

I've come to realize that I have several traditionally guy hobbies that I enjoy, but not in the same way that guys normally do.  So even my attempts at fitting in as a guy were all for girly reasons.

For example, I really like riding my motorcycle, but my favorite part is the motorcycle wave.  For those who aren't aware, motorcycle riders usually wave or acknowledge each other as they pass each other on the road.  It's like having a momentary connection...a feeling of camaraderie.  So even for something as manly as riding a motorcycle, my favorite part of it is emotional.

I'm also a big sports fan, but I rarely watch games.  I just follow the news, and I'm more interested in the players and the strategy of building a team.  Again...the relational side of it.

What about you ladies?  Any traditional guy hobbies or activities that you enjoy for girly reasons?

Holy crap Katie! :oYou just blew my mind. I do this too! Everyone will ask me if I saw the game and I'm like no, but I can tell you all the roster moves and the scouting reports on the most obscure rookie. I feel like I'm in a twilight zone episode!!!

I'm a big sports fan, own more power tools than most dudes and love to shred on guitar.

Same monkeys, different barrel.

Four wheeling- to be in nature and really see how small and vulnerable I am when I park at 9500+ft elevation and take in the view.

Building stuff- for the art of it, or a lot of times to make other peoples lives easier, some stuff has a touch of both.  Sometimes I get very crafty too with stuff I make, which is girly I guess.

The value of my tool collection rivals that of my house.  There is a generous portion of which were bought because they are cute or neat.

My AR-15-    accessories???  YES PLEASE!! It's like the barbie I was never allowed to have.

If I were a girl, I'd be 'one of the boys', :)

but I'm not sure, maybe I'd more comfortable like girl things too if I were a girl.

Honestly I don't see any of that as girly or guy(y?) <--yep I said that. Course I've also been trying not to see things as black or white but the different shades of grey and hues of color!

But to stay on topic.

I play lots of video games, but the part I like most is making a character and the more customization the better...its like shopping for clothing but with out all the hassle and everything fits!

I was about to say this exact thing. lol I rarely play games where I can't make my character all pretty and change my outfit constantly.

Building & construction. I wouldn't call it a hobby since I am only a passive observer but I am utterly fascinated by building sites and love peeking through the hoardings to check out what they've done over the course of the last week or so. It's most fascinating when the building is still a hole in the ground but they're slowly working their way up to street level. Don't know why it fascinates me but it does.

I am an out doors woman, I like to fish and hunt, but not for the sport I use every part of the animal that i can. I eat the meat, I give the bones to my dogs, and the hide goes into making drums.

I do my own work on my cars, because its cheaper and i know how. even a woman can get her hands dirty under the hood of her car. :D

Thanks for this, it's good to know somebody feels the same way. :)

I'm very outdoorsy too, I like to camp, because nature is way beautiful! I fish too, but mostly because I like to eat fish, and $1 for bait is way, way better than what the grocery store charges, and it tastes so much better when it's so fresh. :D

At home, I play a lot of video games, like a lot of my generation does, even though it's generally considered a male hobby. Most of the ones I play are more like an interactive story though... the best ones ever in my opinion are those with a profound emotional impact (which non-gamers are sometimes surprised to hear happens). The best ones are true art, IMHO. It's definitely that emotional connection to the characters you play that appeals to me. Shooters or adventure games or other types of "guy games" just kind of bore me.

The rest of my free time is spent reading or writing. But I think that one's kind of unisex. Though ex-girlfriends have told me my taste in literature is decidedly female, whatever that means. That goes beyond trashy romance (though I love those, too :D). Maybe TMI, but my first girlfriend actually gave me a trashy novel to get me to actually sleep with her, lol.

It's not that the activities are intrinsically male or female.  Although, many activities do appeal primarily to one or the other.  But I've noticed that I seem to enjoy typically male activities for decidedly female reasons.  Just like you enjoy the customization of characters more than actually playing the games.  That's not something most men would even think of.

Sounds beautiful.  I just moved to the Seattle area, and I often catch myself just looking around while driving.  It's so amazing here.

The games are boring for the most part.  But the news is interesting, and a lot less stressful than actual news.

I used to play a bit of golf but just dont have the money to do that anymore. I am an advid surfer and I have some low quality youtube videos of me surfing tiny waves in Florida. When I was younger I did not do anything in regards to transitioning because I was so involved within the surf community.

I don't know if either are guy hobbies, both were good ways to escape when I was younger.

I think any hobby can be enjoyed by any gender, but some attract more of one.  Model railroading is one of them, and the specific interests are very diverse.  Personally, I want to build a scale model of a nearby station complete with scheduled services.  There's a large historic interest as I'd change at that station to travel to my gran's or my uni and I enjoyed seeing how the trains and services changed over time.

I honestly have trouble understanding how these can be girly reasons.  There's always a reason why you enjoy something, an emotional aspect and even a specific interest.

Sailing for me! Although there are definitely more men than women, I don't see it as a particularly male-dominated hobby. In sailing, I like being on the water, moving with just the energy in the wind, the stars in the off-shore sky at night (absolutely amazing!). I see these as *slightly* girlier aspects. But I also like like the excitement high - wind sailing (though there is a limit!), with the boat heeled over.

I am also pretty handy around the house/car/boat, but that has more to do with skill-set and saving money.

Kim :)
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Well it is true, none of my guy friends get why I like character customization so much. Sure some of them enjoy it also, but I its almost a must for me in a game for me to enjoy it. Again not sure how girly it is or how artsy it is since I am a graphic designer and needing to have control over what my stuff looks like is something I "MUUUST" have hehe.

I like Pro Wrestling because i think the movements they make are very pretty and resemble a balle....probably everyone thinks i'm crazy now.

I love football (or to most americans Soccer), because i feel it's beautiful, they way they move, the plays and what not when it all comes to a goal, it's like a song or a play.

and i like video games because it's fun, though i've never played things like...well any FPS game except for one of the Call Of Duty and Halo 2 (i think it was Halo 2 anyway), last few games i really like were Amazing Spider Man 2, Infamous: Second Son & Last Of Us (The last one may be gross but had a great story ;D!)
All I can say is that my life is pretty plain, I like watchin' the puddles gather rain.

Despite all my rage, I'm still just a rat in a cage
