So I have been trying to grow out my hair for a more feminine look. The problem I have is that my hair is naturally really curly, curls up in itself, gets tangled really easily, and just has a mind of it's own. I also have a ton of fly away strands that are sticking out farther than my hair, adding unneeded poofiness, and creates a web of wiry fly aways. Any tips on how to get rid of this problem and to grow more feminine hair?

Sounds like you need a good leave in conditioner, but Patience and a good hair routine will do it! It took me forever to grow out my hair, its past my boobs now but once I had my routine down the growth took off. I have super curly hair, its a mix of the 3s. Also to ensure healthy hair growth you need to get your ends cut periodically.

Idk what kind of curls you have but just go to this site and find out what texture your hair is, they have tons of recommendations for products that help with frizz for your specific hair type.

Awesome! I will check those out! I finally went just to a haircut place by my house because unfortunately I am still in guy mode and got my ends cut which they desperately needed. As far as my curls go (my hair is about just below ear length) the ends curl while the hair closer to the top of my head has little waves, but the second it is humid outside, and living in Houston that is all the time, they curl also.

After checking out the naturally curly website, I have the curly twirly type hair, with hair on the finer side and probably on the higher side of porosity.

Conditioner is a must. And antifrizz serum is a must too. Gel works really good too. Let it dry and then run your hands through your hair and it should be soft without all the frizz. Heat is a killer with curly hair. Straight iron or blow dryer I have never had any kind of good luck with. If you do straight iron it, take a dryer sheet and rub your hair down with it. If not mine gets all staticy and looks worse than letting it dry naturally with the gel.

with a flat iron, there are heat protection products so your ends aren't fried. I use them but I only flat iron about 3 times a month, shampoo once a week, since shampooing any more than that wrecks my hair. The rest of the time I'm putting natural products as conditioner to maintain healthy hair and for frizz control.

And the flat iron hasn't ruined my curls either so I can switch whenever I want but its because of the heat protection and maintaining my hair. However if you flat iron every day then yea its gonna mess up your texture regardless of heat protection. Your hair can only take so much, especially if its curly hair.

I had exactly the same problem with shoulder-length hair, sister! So I got tired, found a male stylist (don't trust women- they're jealous and hate to make other women look better than them; think about it) and went for a pixie cut. Bang! My hair instantly became thicker, straighter, more manageable, and softer. You might want to go for a shorter style, because in at least my case, the longer the hair the curler it becomes.

Also, as others said above, reduce to washing hair only once a week. My hair became much much healthier that way.

Well, as someone with really unmanageable curly hair, I can say that it won't be easy at first.  I have to discourage you from using a flat iron...if your hair is really really curly like mine, it won't be able to handle the damage!

One thing you really should consider is deep conditioning-I use a deep conditioner twice weekly and leave it in overnight.  It's really made a huge difference.  My hair is a million times more manageable than it was before.
My gender problem isn't half as bad as society's.  Although mine is still pretty bad.

I have to disagree, I have your hair type even curlier in some areas, it can handle the flat iron no problem with the right products and care. Deep conditioning is definitely a must.

Lady Oricle:

Not to derail, but really?  What's your trick?  It must take hours...

Yeah at most 2-3 hours but I can sometimes do it in about an hour and a half, If I'm not being slow. But like I said in one of my posts its about having the right products in between flat iron sessions. I only flat iron about 3 times a month, sometimes less. The flat iron I have is really good I guess(ceramic), I turn it up to about 350 and use a heat protection/stylin gel as I run the flat iron through. After about a week it gets this wavy texture that I love and I keep it detangled with a wide tooth comb.

Also knowing protective styles for your hair when you go to sleep is also key for maintaining your curls and your ends.

I use "its a 10" shampoo and leave in conditioner with keratin (both products). I also use aloe and spray it on my hair to lower the PH after shampooing and before using the conditioner.

Flat Iron and head to a salon or something, see what they have to say?

I've tried flat irons and all it does for me is make my hair too staticy. No matter what I do. I gave up a long time ago and just let it do what it wants to do with conditioner and either Argon oil or a good antifrizz serum and the strongest gel I can find and let it dry naturally. I blow dry it even and still look like the girl hold the static thing with hair sticking up all over the place. I've even tried chemical straighteners and with my hair they didn't even work. Oh yeah a little more wavy and less curly but I am so scared of frying my hair that I don't even consider it anymore. Curly can be extremely feminine.
