So I had posted not too long ago that I was basically hired for a Detention Officer position. I was so excited and everyone had been wonderful. Well...I was, that is until the hiring person was having issue with a certain form. The Selective Service that every male has to sign up for 30 days after turning 18. Well, since I transitioned in my 20s and I was never made aware of this, I never did anything with Selective Service. Well, it seems like a fairly simple fix. I'd have to send in some paperwork to the Selective Service people so they could send me a letter of exemption. But this would take weeks. The main person at the Detention Center pretty much said she didn't know if she could hold the place for me and I looked up some more information and I doubted that the paperwork would ever come in time so I just had to bow out. While this isn't an issue for many jobs that I have applied to, it is an issue for some and I'm sure it is going to come up again. So I just wanted everyone to educate themselves on this issue and get it fixed as soon as you can. It might just cost you a job if they are on a deadline.

For FtMs this makes no sense at all because being trans will make you an automatic 4-F anyway. I feel this was an excuse only and something else made them give the spot to someone else. Strange world isn't it?

Oh no I understand what you are saying but that's the issue. They wanted to wait for my stuff to come in. And they thought it would only be 2-3 weeks. But I looked it up and saw that selective services really takes a lot longer than that. The only issue is that legally I couldn't "start" until the selective service letter with my exemption was in their hands. I had told the lady from SELECTIVE SERVICES I never bothered with any of this because I am trans and I knew that would be an automatic disqualifier anyway. Well her response was that it doesn't matter that I needed to send the form in anyway...She was very nice but this seems really stupid.

And the reason the superintendent didn't think she could hold my spot is because everyone hired was going to go to an academy at a certain date. But they remained really nice. Oh well. I'm not gonna waste anyone's time so I told them to forget it. I'm just gonna look for another job.

Some states require every male to register with Selective Service when they get their drivers license, so it maybe a non-issue in certain states.

Is this something one can do prior to legal gender marker change? Or only after?

Wow, and even after you told her about being trans?  This is messed up. I hope it goes well.

From what I've always heard, I'd assumed it wasn't an issue if you still hadn't had your sex marker changed.

Well the trans issue has nothing to do with it imo.  The OP has changed his sex marker legally as far as I recall from reading his posts, so that sort of paper work (proof he either registered for the Selective Service or was exempt) is just a part of living life as a person who is legally male.

Remember that men who'd be disqualified for a disability or similar reasons are still supposed to register (unless they're continually confined, in which they're exempt if they can't get out in public). The most bizarre case of not being exempt from registration - illegal aliens! (Those here legally on certain visas, mainly "non-immigrant" ones, are exempt though. I think that'd be justice for those illegals if they actually get conscripted, though we may have to put them through a "boot camp" that teaches them English if they don't speak it already.)

U.S. citizens or immigrants who are born male and have a sex change are still required to register. In the event of a resumption of the draft, males who have had a sex change can file a claim for an exemption from military service if they receive an order to report for examination or induction."

You may not be required to register as a female to male transsexual but you may need to prove why you didn't have to register, like what the OP is going through now.  People who legally change their sex marker to male have two options.
1) Register if you are under 26 and if a draft happens you file for exemption. 
2) Don't register and instead request a status letter from the selective service that explains you are exempt from registering, (this also applies to those who don't change their sex marker till after they turn 26) 

Funnily enough, I randomly got a letter in the mail telling me to sign up for Selective Service...addressed to a Mr [feminine first and middle name]. I just kind of laughed and filled it out. They sent me back the cards with all the necessary information. So. You may be able to get away with signing up regardless. Either way, I'd start figuring out how to deal with it because it can seriously screw things up later on down the road.

Edit: as a relevant side note, this is probably because the DMV gave me a paper to fill out that didn't actually have a gender thing on it. So the person just put male in. Oh well. Not my problem.

Here in Texas the DPS registered me when I changed my gender on my DL, which was nice but at the same time annoying because they didn't tell me so I went to register online and couldn't because I'd already been registered.

Thanks for the heads up though since I'm waiting on my final call back for a Juvenile Detention Officer position.

And yes, the uppers all know I'm trans. no one batted a single eyelash at that, which is just awesome.

It didn't take that long for mine to come. It came before my new DL in fact. But YMMV of course. Maybe you can ask about reapplying later on?

Yeah, this was one of the first things I actually saw about legal gender change from F to M. It really surprised me, since I'd get an auto DQ, but it made sense after a bit (as someone said earlier, disabled men who'd be automatically DQ'd have to at least register, too).
Still, sucks to have to find out that way. Mondo sympathy, dude. Better luck next time.

Yea that came up in my most recent job.  Had to put in my selective service number (or something to that effect).  I think that it was the sort of thing where I could make sure to do it within a certain period of time in having the job.  Luckily I'd done it already.  The lawyer who helped me with my name/marker change keyed us into it.
