I work at a company that has cigna for health insurance but with the exclusion clause and it's also self-funded(by the company) so that's not going to help with surgery. However; I live in Massachusetts which changed rules last year to force private insurance to cover surgery now. Since the health insurance through work is self-funded then the state rules relating to non-discrimination don't apply to my insurance. I'm wondering if I can turn down insurance from my employer and instead buy private insurance in the state. It seems like that should be possible but I can't find information either way to say.
Ideally I'd be able to get it through work but I doubt they're willing to change their policy(they're a backwards badly managed company based in the south) so if I can't turn down their insurance I'd basically have to switch jobs otherwise right?
