When I was 22-23 I worked here a little, but in low short term jobs below my skill level.  I had a really hard time of it back then as we were not accepted anywhere in Australia.  I since worked again for a few months around just under 30 as I was very lucky to get job as a contractor but found others upgraded to permanency and myself passed over, despite their not performing to any great extent better than myself.

Since then using my skills in admin I sought out jobs occasionally just to figure out if our market would change in how it treats us, but to no avail.

I'm left wondering if I would've been bettr off getting into job before transition and changing there, here in Australia it's impossible to be hired here in any sought after job unless you're super passable.  I would advise those overseas thinking of coming here - don't.  Most I know, except a few old cross dressers who now say they're transgender have been unable to maintain oneself in rewarding, mainstream employment.

Don't know what kind of work you do, but very few people are working at the level they aspire too, with the way things are, many people are lucky to be working at all. I haven't had full employment since before I transitioned, so I can't entirely blame my transition. I have a large amount of experience in customer service/call centre roles and have little trouble getting short term contracts, but I'm finding that the long term roles and perm positions just aren't around.  I'm also a qualified chef - I get some work as a kitchen hand, again, being trans isn't the issue.. Lack of experience gets me there.

I've worked for small companies and I've worked for some of Australia's largest.. Spent some time working at our oldest bank.  I can not and will not blame the employment issues I've had purely on being trans, a good hard look at the employment situation will show you that many, many people are having similar issues.

I'm left wondering if being trans is something you bring up during interviews or on the job.. It's not relevant to my ability to do the job, so I don't mention it. Strange that no one else mentions it if I don't..

Welcome to the Forum Cindy (Skier), looking at your handle I would think snow sports... around this time of year the Ski Resorts hire, not sure if they are liberally minded tho... would guess they may be, but its not permanent!

Get a role before transition if you are still someway off... unfortunately the streets here are no longer paved in gold for everyone, only a very elite few  :'(

Good luck and enjoy Susan's  :)

Hiya, Cindy - look into applying at a private hospital (esp Ramsay Health).

They have been incredibly supportive of me, and yes, at first I looked like a dude in ladies uniform.

Good luck x

That has a humorous edge, but love it, maybe its something I should look at, given I am job hunting in IT ATM...  :(
