I got a call from my sister a short while ago today and it's not good. My dad has bowel cancer and he's in hospital having a bag fitted so that he can go for a dump as his bowel isn't doing what it's supposed to do. I've seen tons of adverts on tv about people finding out they, or a loved one, has cancer, but I just feel sad and emotionless at the same time, even though I love my dad. My dad already has diabetes and has to inject himself daily with insulin. Anyway, I'll be going to see him shortly, so I'll let you know how things are going later.

Hugs. It's never easy to deal with something like this. I lost my dad to cancer when I was just barely 13 years old after he fought off 2 bouts of cancer. One in his colon and the other in his lungs. I pray that he will be okay and be cancer free soon. I wish I could say it gets easier to handle, but it doesn't because 2 years ago my mom was diagnosed with pre-cancer of the uterean lining. The only method they were willing to try with her was medication due to her health issues. Luckily the medication did the trick. I'm sure your  father is in good hands.

Thank you all for your messages of support. My dad is in good spirits, but he thinks he'll be in hospital for about 6 weeks to 6 months. I'm going back tomorrow afternoon to see how he's doing.

Thanks again.

Wow, six months would be quite a stay - hope it's not that long, and that he is able to recover.

Thanks, Grace. He's in his mid 50s now and has had numerous problems since turning 50. One would hope that he only stays there for a maximum of 6 weeks at the most for treatment, but I fear he might be in there for a while yet because of his other complications. I think he said yesterday when I went to see him that he was having issues with his kidneys aswell, although I'm not certain as to whether the cancer has moved into them already or if he just has another issue there. I went and caused some problems with my right kidney about this time last year with some sort of blockage. That is a pain I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, it was really bad!! :(

I'm going to see him again today, hopefully he is still doing ok. He has a great sense of humour, luckily it runs in the family, so hopefully that'll help keep his spirits high and looking at the positives.

Thanks again.

Thanks again for all your support during this difficult time, it's much appreciated. :)

I heard from my dad today (we were texting) and he said he had been feeling a bit sick due to a change in his meds. Also, he's been moved into a private room to reduce the risk of infections. I just hope he isn't driving the nurses nuts, as he does have a great sense of humour which seems to be keeping him happy, but there's still a long road ahead.

Anyway, thanks again, you people are awesome!!

Chris,
It's not uncommon for them to get sick from the meds and the private room in his case isn't shocking either. Best wishes to both of you. Hopefully he is in remission and cured before you know it. I'm glad to here he is in good spirits. A sense of humor always helps. :) Hugs

Just a quick update:

My dad had an operation last night (Ileostomy) to fit a bag so that he can go to the toilet. All went really well going by what one of the nurses at the nurse's station told me. My dad is due to get some test results on Friday, so hopefully he'll have a better idea as to what is going on. Going by what he was saying yesterday when I saw him, he is due to start Chemo next week, as he has cancer in the kidneys and liver. The pain he was having in his stomach turned out to be a blockage of some sort, hence why he has a Ileostomy. So it isn't bowel cancer he has, he has liver and kidney cancer. Hopefully, we'll find out more on Friday once he gets his test results.

Thanks again for all your messages of support. :D

In recent days my dad and I have been speaking about how things are going with his surgeries. He's had some tumours removed from his bowel, mainly the small intestine and that's pretty much clear now, so no Ileostomy needed. He had a ultrasound scan done today and it turns out he still has some tumours in his liver. The part that has bothered me some, is that he has been saying that the cancer is uncureable, which to me means it's terminal. He is due to have a meeting with some people in the hospital tomorrow to discuss what'll happen when he leaves hospital, which could be sooner than he originally thought, days instead of weeks or months. There is still the issue of treatment (Chemo) and that is the part that worries me the most. If his cancer is terminal, then it is only a matter of time before treatment will stop doing much of anything.

I should hear from my dad tomorrow about how the meeting went, so I'll update this topic then.

Thanks again.

Thanks, Devlyn.

Turns out my dad is going home today and starting Chemo in 2-3 weeks. :D I was hoping to go and see him, but he needs time to recuperate at home, so I might see him next week.

More updates next week. :)
