Kellam

Well, i changed my name to Kellam, my middle name, when I was in my late teens. I was setting off to become an artist and poet. I have a dull last name so I thought it made me more exotic. Also, it is kinda gender neutral. The first time I landed in print, a letter to the editor of an art mag, they were unsure and gave me the old she/he?. Which I loved because it also meant they couldn't divine my gender by my words. But my birth name is Chris. And my family still calls me that. As I was coming to terms with all this, I found myself wanting to go back to Chris, but maybe spelled with a k and no h. Kris. I have a small professional reputation (artist/author) as Kellam and though I need to return to it it is there. I may just keep Kellam as my professional/online/middle name. It has done me well. Becoming Kris as opposed to Chris feels like a homecoming too.

*laughing* My birth name gets mistaken for female all the time in it's written form. It's handy when ordering fem things online.

In Norse mythology, there's a Valkyrie that gets killed, but she's brought back with a new name.

I'm changing my first name to "Kara".

Still waiting to tell my Dad about my transition to decide if I'm keeping the last name.

When my wife and I were coming up with names for our daughter, I was leaning towards more traditional names.  Katherine, Olivia, Elizabeth, Emily, etc.  But my wife wasn't going to have it.  So we compromised on another name.

So when it came time to rename myself, it just came to me...Katherine Elizabeth.  And I've always gone by Kate.

I just remember always liking my name. So, I decided to use it. I didn't pick a middle name and I kept my family name since I still wanted to feel a part of my family. I recently got married and did not change my last name to my husband's last name because I remember how tedious it was to change my first name (ie. ID, passport, social security card, credit bureaus, birth certificate, etc). OMG what a hassle. But maybe I'll change it later on when I feel more up to it, lol.

I am choosing Rachel because my given name also begins with an "R". I also want a Hebrew name, but not something so uncommon that everyone notices me for a having a highly unusual name. I am undecided on what to do about my middle name. I am considering Leelah as a middle name for a few reasons. I think Leelah deserves to be remembered. I think it is a pretty name. It would also be a lot easier for my family if I added three letters to my middle name than if I chose something that sounds totally different.
