How easy was it to get your apartment or house in America if the landlord knew somehow that you're trans?

Hi, welcome to Susan's Place! That's a tough question to answer. Some landlords would care, and others only care about getting their rent on time. Legally, there's not supposed to be discrimination, but only a fool would state a reason they knew would get them in trouble.

The complex I currently live in knows and doesn't care.

The three complexes I am in the process of looking at when my lease is up also know and don't care.

For the most part, as long as you have good credit or a solid source of income/record of paying things on time, I don't think you'll have any issues. I also live in a more progressive area (northern Virginia right outside Washington DC), so that may play a part in it.

My apartment complex is far more interested in whether I pay my rent on time and whether I am destroying the apartment than whether or not I'm trans. I suspect you might run into these issues with a landlord that rents only a few properties but I don't think that the large complexes really care. When I went full time I just took my name change documents into the office and they made the change for me and chatted with me about my transition. It was easy peasy.

Why would anythone even mention to a landlord they are trans??

It's not so much that it's been mentioned, but if you're on the lease as one name/gender and suddenly start paying with checks of a different name, or you have to go into the office at all, it's a bit of a heads up to them.

Same with the application process and applying with documents that say a female name and F but presenting as very masculine and telling them I go by Max.

Never explicitly stated, but fairly obvious.

I don't mention. There are simply some paperwork that indicate my past, giving them a hint.
