I've now come out to my family, all my friends, and several acquaintances whom I see perhaps once or twice a year. The only really stupid reaction I've had came from one of the latter, a diehard lesbian feminist whose social and political development came to a crashing halt sometime in the late 70s.
She said just about every stupid thing possible, and topped it off by asking why I couldn't just (do the politically correct thing and) live as gender-non-conforming woman. This was AFTER I had explained that I had tried to do exactly that for approximately 40 years, and that the net result had been a very near brush with suicide a few months earlier.
She also managed to offend a good friend of mine who was present, an Ojibwe woman who identifies both as a dyke and as two-spirited, by going on about the way "Native People" are so accepting of two-spirited folks. My friend had a thing or two to say about that, given the hatred and discrimination she's experienced from her band.
