So I called to finally change my Gender Marker with my Auto Insurance Progressive. When it changed from F to M they lowered my bill from $180 per month to $140. In total I saved $200. I'm shocked! I didn't even ask the guy why. lol

Before my insurance kept going up yet I never had any accidents.

So now I'm officially legally male and I get cheaper car insurance?!

What's your take on this?

It's usually the other way around.
Women tend to pay less.

The opposite happened to me, but I think it was due to the accident I had 2 years ago and a bs charge of minor talking on a cell phone (unsure of date, but was never notified of charges). I was 21 at the time of my accident and I never use my phone in the car.

My yearly bill went up $150 after I was switched to male.

Did you have to send them any kind of documentation? I'm just starting to change my name/gender on documents this week, and am wondering what I'll need to provide them with.

Wow, you're lucky. I'm on my parents' plan with State Farm and they said changing it from F to M would raise my rates. Who do you have, if you're in the States?

When I switched mine for male to female with Geico (super easy to do since they just read the driver's license number that has a gender marker code in it), mine dropped a little.

Nope, after I changed my gender marker with dmv, I called up my insurance to let them know and they know by your driver's lisence number. So I personally didn't have to send them anything. Took about 5 min over the phone...no questions as to why it was just done. :D

Just an aside. Car insurance seems to vary wildly. I dive an MX-5 sportscar and pay $AUS500 a year, about $400 USA? What are you driving KAT to get $USA900 a year? The Ferrari you showed me?

LordKAT

Nope, old clunker with over 250k miles on it.

BTW, that is fairly cheap insurance. I have had quotes that go well over 1500 / year.

I recently bought a car (a couple of weeks ago). The lady on the phone was trying to figure out was my rate had raised from what I did online to what she figured up. Then she finally realized what it was and said she wasn't going to tell me because it was silly. So I asked her what it was and she told me it's because the system had me as an female. So she changed it because she could hear my voice.  That saved me about $60/month. I too have a clean record. She told me rates are higher for ladies because they make more claims. Just as if you live in a bad neighborhood were cars get broken in or vandalized and the claims are high your rates will be higher also. I told her that was crazy and that's a great example of keeping poor people poor because their insurance rates are more expensive if they live in a bad neighborhood.

This is based on your age. For a person under 25 males seem to have more accidents than females. So it goes by age and gender. Once you hit 30 it would be better to change it to male.

Weird! In Australia it is the opposite! Yes under 30's males carry extra but women get cheaper insurance.

When I was young it was always more expensive for males. I don't know about now.

Wow that is a shock if it is more expensive for females now... I hope they don't jack up mine.

Anyway, I currently pay $975 for 6 months with Progressive. This is for two vehicles - one a 2004 sedan with 260k miles and the other a 2013 minivan. Both have comprehensive, collision, roadside assistance, rental coverage and 100/300 limits with the lowest deductibles. The van has extra coverage for custom equipment. Insurance premiums are high in NJ. I am curious as to what I'd pay as a female. I guess I find out in a few months.

You think that's bad? When I lived in NYC I paid $8000 (not a typo) per year. And this was WITH a discount being a member of IEEE. This was with Travelers. I was told that healthcare costs in NYC drive the rates.

They never raised my rates for the minor violations. I had one cellphone ticket and one for expired registration. Didn't get any points for either one.

The moving violation they nailed me though, although the officer cut me a break (88 in a 55, No I was not driving a DeLorean, LOL) so I just got improper lane change with a fine and 2 points. I could have gone to court and pleaded it down but I figured I did wrong anyway, so I just paid the $85 fine.

I had a few fender benders and they penalized me for them. The deer hit was the worst, $5000+ in damage and jacked up my premiums $200 per 6 months. But that has since fallen off so I'm good now.

(As ImagineKate already knows) I'm in NJ too. With Geico and two cars and two drivers with a clean driving record. A 2014 Honda CRV (Lease) and a 2012 Fiat 300C Convertible with all the options ( financed) We were paying $1790 per year ( $895 for 6 months ). When my gender was changed on the insurance it dropped $100/year to $1690 per year.
