Hey guys. It would be awesome if people can continue to post updates about their experiences with Dr. Hansen. I am especially curious about the cost for DI. Thanks!

MacG

I've got DI with Dr. Hansen April 28.
I'm not private pay though.

Adam_

I'm scheduled with Dr. Hansen for May 22nd! I'm not sure what the costs are either since insurance is paying for it but if I find out I'll post and let you guys know.

And congrats MacG! You'll have to let us know how it went :)

Awesome news! Congrats guys. June feels so far away for my consult...
  •

MacG

June will be here soon... I agree it's hard to wait.

Adam_

The wait was almost excruciating because you're that much closer but it's still so far away. I guess it's a good thing though, that she is booked so far out and is in such high demand, she must really know what she's doing.

Wow, I'm surprised to see so many going to see this doctor. I've only found out about her a few months ago, but have been having hell working with my insurance (providence, lol) to get stuff set up.

Now just waiting on my doctor to fax the information to Dr. Hansen so I can set up a consultation, but it sounds like there won't be openings for almost 2 months.

I was told she does have pictures as examples of her work, but they don't show it openly. Has anybody here seen it at their consultation? Just curious what some opinions are.

I can let you know after my consult but that's not until mid June. I did talk to someone who had their surgery with her and said the results were really good.

Someone I know had their top surgery (DI) with Dr. Hansen a couple months ago and was kind enough to show me the results and talk about their experience.  After hearing about the very positive experience and results, I have officially decided to go ahead with Dr. Hansen!  I have be on T for a year before I can have my consult, so it won't be until this fall (I started T on 9/24/14), but I will update here when that does happen.  I am excited to hear from others as the year progresses!

I had surgery with Dr. Hansen. I'm super pleased. As you can see, I'm a larger guy at about 200lbs. I also have extra skin from weighing over 300lbs.
At the time of surgery I was just two and a half months on T.
I am very happy with the result so far. The only thing I would possibly change is to request my nips be spaced farther apart. But I'm not sure. Things will likely look different after swelling goes down and I've been on T longer and have built up muscle.

Looks like she did a great job, I'm glad to see there's a doctor within an hour of home that I can go to! What was the cost of surgery at her practice? Blue cross blue shield covers up to 80% for most things on the policy I have, so hopefully this may just turn out to be a huge stroke of luck!

Thanks! I'm very pleased with my healing and post-op care. Almost 3 weeks post-op now.

I'd hit my max out of pocket right before surgery (rough year!) so I won't be paying anything.
I did receive an estimate beforehand, which included staying one night in the hospital. I would have paid about $2,600. I'd have to look. But that's also accounting for my max out of pocket. My insurance covers at 80% and my surgeon and hospital were preferred providers. I really think, with insurance, taking a look at your max out of pocket amount for your insurance might reveal the answer.

Hey, guys! Sorry I haven't updated on my experience with Dr. Hansen.. life got away from me for a bit. I have surgery tomorrow, 5/22! With Providence, all I will have to pay out of pocket will be roughly $1,500 plus the cost of medications and what not, so I'm not sure what private pay would be. I got a notice from them basically saying if my insurance doesn't pick it up, I'm responsible, all that good stuff, and what they have listed as far as costs go are:

Practitioner Charge Estimate: $4,000
Facility Charge Estimate: $10,000
Inpatient/Daypatient Hospital Fee Estimate: $6,000.

I'm not sure if that's just what they charge for insurance companies or how all that works so I don't know if that's even helpful at all? Anyway, I live in the Eugene area and I have quite a few friends that are students at U of O (where I work as well) and with their student insurance (which I believe is Aetna but don't quote me on that) they're all going to see Dr. Hansen as well. One guy had a consult yesterday and he told me they actually suggested a new surgeon at OHSU who has worked with Dr. Hansen because she's becoming so popular in this area.

Wish me luck! I'll be sure to post pictures post op!

Hey guys! Sorry its been so long. I'm 24 days post op now. I have about a week left until I start back at work and another post op appointment on Thursday the 25th of this month. Things have been healing really well. My incisions and nipples look fantastic and I could not be happier with my results. Dr. Hansen and her staff are amazing. I've never had such a positive experience with hospital staff, not to mention, Dr. Hansen's bedside manner is phenomenal.

My surgery went really well. Afterwards I had a lot of pain and nausea so I was actually there a lot longer than typical. The first 5 days were pretty rough with the drains and ace bandage. I heard some pretty bad horror stories about the drains and how uncomfortable they are both to have in and have removed. But Dr. Hansen uses a specific kind of drain that I barely felt coming out so that was a relief. Other than that, I haven't had any issues. It's been an awesome experience from start to finish.

I've taken some photos with an actual camera to make sure I could post as high quality pictures as possible. The first photo is obviously pre-op, second one is 8 days post op and the last one is from tonight, 24 days post op. My nipples are healing fast but I still have a lot of sensitivity and discomfort. It's getting there though.

Hello,

It sounds like most people on this thread already have a lot of information, but in case it helps, I wanted to share new info that OHSU was handing out at trans pride this past weekend.

As stated previously, yes, OHP is starting to cover trans procedures this year.

What's more, OHSU seems to be committed to having an excellent transgender care program. Here is a quote and contact info from the flyer they were handing out. I can't post pics yet, so sorry for the long text:

"OHSU's current transgender services include pubertal suppressants, HRT, FTM Top, BA, orchiectomy, hysterectomy/oophorectomy.
Services will be expanded in 2016 to include FFS, metiodioplasty, vaginoplasty, vulvoplasty/labiaplasty, phaloplasty, and penectomy."

I hope this can be of help to someone.

Congrats, Adam!  Looking fantastic!  And thank you for sharing your experiences - I am so glad we are finally getting some details "on the books" about Dr. Hansen.  I will definitely add my experiences when I have my consult and surgery this winter!

And thanks, orangeskipper.  Fantastic information to have.  It is really exciting that such a big, prominent hospital is starting to develop these resources/programs for us.

Thank you so much to both of y'all for providing pictures. Everything looks amazing -- and having some photos has been a godsend.

My T doctor at Legacy Good Samaritan Clinic in Portland just referred me to another doctor that accepts insurance for top surgery and works at Legacy Emmanuel in Portland. Just a heads up for anyone that was interested in more options! She's apparently fantastic but I can't speak on that without seeing a portfolio of some kind. That being said, did Dr. Hansen have a portfolio of before and afters for you guys to look at during the consult?
