When I was 18 I had to sign up for the selective service due to being legally male and honestly it is still a trigger. But does being transgender get you excluded from being drafted if it ever happens? Also does anyone know the cut off age? And if I can get social security changed from male to female would it exclude me? I live in a southern state so getting these things changed isn't exactly easy. It just scares me so bad that a thing like that can come take away any chance of happiness I could have. I know it's a weird fear.

Transgender people cannot currently openly serve. Attitudes about that are changing.

If you were theoretically drafted you would not pass the intake screening because you transgender.  Either 25 or 26 is the cutoff.

It said on the website that it only covers if you had the surgery for it. Last year back in July I had a legal name change and I was apparently suppose to let them know in 10 days after which I'm going Wednesday to get the document to send off. This whole thing has been making me have a panic attack and I haven't found my proof of registering either. I know it's somewhere.

*edit* thankfully I found my proof of registering. I just have to get the stuff to send off about my name change. I tend to worry too much about this stuff I just kind of hate that the government still sees me as a man. :/

Back when I was of age for selective service you were eligible until 27 if you didn't have any deferments and 35 if you did.

However, during war times that was changed based on the military requirements.

I know now they go on volunteer base mainly now. But everytime I see something like that it always just reminds me that I'm male etc. Even from how they seen on their site they used the correct terms on the site but still treats mtfs as males and ftms as females. Which is so wrong to me. Because it isn't true and I hate that this type of crap always goes on.

How do you suggest they should be treated?

During basic training and at numerous other times you are housed in open barracks or have conditions where there is no privacy provided. What do you think it would be like for an FTM male with a vagina in an all male environment or an MTF female with a penis in an all female environment? Would they always be safe?

I'm regarding in MTF being forced to register for selective service when women and ftm aren't even allowed. It initself just reminds me that they still see me as a man regardless. I'm not talking about doing it on your own accord.  A MTF shouldn't be forced to register for selective service because it's only for men.

Try not to sweat it. There isn't a draft, you already have registering out of the way, and you wouldn't serve anyway.

I can see your point if you are legally recognized as a female. However, since women are allowed to serve in all branches of the military why should they be excluded from registering for the draft or from being drafted if it is ever reinstated?

I'm still pretty paranoid it can happen again and take away every bit of happiness I'm working for. I'm only 19 so I would still have 7 years (birthday is in September). I try not to worry about this stuff but the fact that they require it for males only and still require MTF because of them being declared male at birth is disturbing. Their site only mentions surgery for exclusion it doesn't mention anything else or what type of surgery. (I'm assuming the bottom surgery).

It's a matter of women being unable to join selective service to me which makes this worse on my mental state especially since women serve in the military. It's just one of those things it kind of burns me. I mean really if they would even mention MTF on their website (they did) they know we exist but yet continue to ignore what it really is and force is to register even though we aren't make and it's only because of what we are at birth. Women can sign up for selective service, they just don't have to.

You still wouldn't be called upon to serve. Medical exclusion. Conscripted troops don't do the job as well as volunteers, the military doesn't want a draft.

So basically they don't want to force a draft unless it's a last resort? Like if something happened to the whole army? That's good and I do have asthma like symptoms (not diagnosed) my doctor said I was borderline of having it.  Now I just have to get the paper to send off about my name change. I hope they don't do anything bad since it's been so long. :/ like I didn't know I had to inform them with in 10 days.

I feel that soon females will be required to register. This is a good thing as long as selective service still exists. That said if WW3 were breaking out I would still sign up but probably try to be an officer or something so I can use my education and skills more effectively. That is if they would even take me, as I have medical conditions to my name plus the whole trans thing.

I feel it's fine long as everyone has to rather than just "male persons" which seems to include MTF as stated earlier. The transgender thing isn't very specific from what I've read.
