Another cable network is looking to capitalize on the public's interest in the transgender community by airing a real-life version of the Amazon drama Transparent.

This summer, ABC Family will premiere Becoming Us, an unscripted show that chronicles the life of 17-year-old Ben Lehwald of Evanstan, Illinois, as his father Charlie transitions to become Carly.

The docu-series from Ryan Seacrest Productions will take Ben's perspective as he watches his dad divorce his mom, Suzy, before undergoing gender reassignment surgery.

Looks like this summer will offer some interesting viewing!  Just hope that it shows our community in a good light, and not exploitative etc.

Transgender dad?  I thought it was going to be an FtM parent.  I was actually looking forward to that......not that there's anything wrong with shows surrounding MtF people.  At least the trans community is getting more exposure, and with that being said, hopefully there will be a similar show surrounding FtMs.  :)  One thing at a time though I guess.

I agree. I'd like to see my brothers getting some positive exposure.

You have to remember the FTM are non existent being they are no seen a threats to society.

I just shiver every time I hear some non transgender doing a show about transgender then in the end using a non transgender actor.

Its like I see visions of Zoey Tur type of knife stabs to the community.

Just like the bathroom bills, it would take the FTM's to make a statement by entering the Female bathrooms before it would make sense to these stupid lawmakers.

Anyhow we will have to see if it will help or hurt.

This is part of the reason why it steams me so much that our community is willing to let the entertainment industry tell our stories. They only focus on one narrative (transwoman, always knew, headed for SRS) and ignore so many (all trans men, non-binary, people who need to discover their gender, intersex, etc.)

Unfortunately unless we as community unite find our own voice, that's the way it will be.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

It seems awful, just the misgendering title is a horrible premise

Why do I have a feeling that a "reality" TV show might not portray the lives of trans people in a way that is accurate, dignified, and not sensationalized?

Cool I hope this becomes true. I'm from Northern Chicago, so it'd be cool so see understand the area references and the transition parts too. Sounds cool

As many have stated I would love to see more focus on out brothers. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the focus on our sisters. Both in good light and done right of course.

Which is why I thought the story was going to be about an ftm, lol.

I'll be honest When I saw the title, I automatically assumed mtf. Transgender dad sounds that way to me.

I think the reason most people are getting confused is they're seeing "transgender" and "dad" and automatically putting it together and get ftm. I can see that since that's something we know about here. For me I kind of knew it wasn't going to be this way because it's a less common thing. We all know that transgender is most dominated by mtf. Hate to say it but it's true. All you ever hear for transgender news is mostly dominated by mtfs. If Chaz Bono hadn't been ftm, I think people would be largely uneducated about the woman side of it.

Now I love our brothers here, but It's basically easier for a woman to become a man because of the way T affects the body. Woman cut their hair short and dress manly. When T kicks in they get deeper voices and hair on their body. Other than the top surgery, it's pretty easy to fit in.

When Men transition into woman it's harder because the E takes longer to work. Than we have to grow out the hair, learn to change your voice, remove unwanted hair, and possibly breast enhancement/ FRS.

So I can see where a network would be more inclined to show a mans transition rather than a woman. Yes a woman's transition can be hard to do as well.
It just makes more sense and this is what people think about when they hear transgender. I know eventually once being transgender is considered "fine", than the ftm role will become more established.

Kind of ironic (and sucks) that ftm still get the raw end of the deal even though for cis people it's opposite with the woman who get the discrimination.

No, the problem is that they always use trans women to discriminate us, how we are not safe in the bathrooms with other cis women, like we are going to harass them or something, and because seeing a male patriarch in a family becoming a woman is a strange thing for cis people, because men are thought that they are better so they shouldn't feel the need to transition. There is also a fascination for how transition works, because that's what this is all going to be about probably, especially the surgeries, etc... Especially SRS. They are also interested in their sexuality after transition, because they think that most of the time, a trans woman starts liking men out of a sudden (which might happen).

Also, transgender women are often depicted in media as drag queens, sex workers, dead bodies, or tragic objects of pity or scorn. and therefore seeing someone like a dad of a family "magically turning transgender", is a shock to people.
